Hi everybody. I have my betta in a 3 gallon tank with an inch-long snail (I think it's a mystery snail). The substrate is standard sized aquarium gravel, colored black. When I replace water in the tank I use a small airline hose to remove old water plus vacuum the gravel a bit. (I can't use a regular aquarium siphon to vacuum because my tank is too small.) My problem is this. Using the airline hose, it is either vacuuming up little gravel pieces or getting gravel pieces stuck inside it, which ...

It's made me really paranoid, I didn't even know they were a type that had a tendency to jump!

I've stuck a textbook on top for now to cover the gap :|

The water is about an inch below the top of the tank, here's a pic of the gaps around the lid;

Thought I'd go ahead and try this after a seemingly knowledgeable man in my LFS advised it to me.

Tank currently has 2 Java ferns (I think) and 2 moss balls. Heater at 30 degrees C and a simple spray bar filter.

20L tank, 17ml of Tetra Safestart added.

Here are the readings after approx. 1 hour from my Nutrafin kit:

pH: 7.75

Ammonia: 1.2

Nitrites: 0.1

Nitrates: 7

3 small hardy fish will be added tomorrow, as per directions (probably cloud minnows).

Any feedback?

Here is what I don't understand. During the day, he has the rings around his eyes and his eyes seem slightly enlarged, but at night, you can barely see the rings and his eyes look fine. Then, in the morning, the eyes are enlarged and have rings again. Can anyone explain why this happens?

So after some juggling about he is now in a longer tank with water about 6 inches deep and a heater and seems happier. It could just be the size of his fins that is causing him trouble. He is flaring and eating. I havent had cts before is this normal for them to struggle to swim with their extended finnage?

I have boxes lined with polyboxes from receiving fish, so would I just need to buy a heat pack, double bag fish and send via next day delivery? I'd pack each betta in a diff bag in case they get nasty during transit, but is that the basic jist of it?

Here is my dilemma:

I have a 10 litre tank (3 gallon), with a betta male and 2 red ramshorns, tank is cycled and planted. Ammonia and nitrite are zero, water is clear, fish is healthy and colorful, Temperature is at 27,5-28ºC, 8h light period! Now... I am infected with the bug of "GIVE HIM A LARGER HOME", what i ask is: should i? need i?

If i were to change tanks i would want to change my gravel (so it would not affect my pH as mine is tending to 7.2-7.5 and i would like it to ...

I went to a lfs to look at the new arrivals(didn't have money)today. There was a gentleman looking at the Bettas and I stroke up a conversation. He had read their ad for Bettas saying how you could keep them in a small bowl.

I said "yeah and you could live in a closet too, but how would you like it? Then I explained a few of the requirements including cycling. He then went over and looked at a 2.5 Aqueon tank for $50.(35lbs.) and I told him it would work, but that it was the bare minimum ...

My divided 6g is giving me nothing but grief. At the bottom of the left side of the tank, down the side of the gravel there seems to be some sort of algae or fungus growing. Its quite a dark green colour. I can't show you photos of it because I'm away for the weekend but I could get photos on Sunday if need be.

A friend said that it might be because that side faces the window. I gave that section a good scrubbing with a toothbrush and sucked it all up. A few weeks later it was back. ...

There are no marks anywhere else on him. He's VERY active, always swimming around and spreading out his fins. Actually, right now he's acting pretty wild. He rubs his face against the front of the tank a lot (I guess begging for food) -- can this cause a mark on the fish? I tested his water last night and all seemed to be fine.
