I was showing my boyfriend pictures of some lovely fancier bettas yesterday, and he actually said he prefers the BSBs (I like that btw!) like my old betta, Moby. To quote him;

" yeh, these bettas look like they're showing off a bit, you know with Moby it was like 'yeah, i have a tail, so what?' "

haha! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

haha, nothing to be embarassed about! My first betta was a lovely VT. Then i came onto this forum... so everyone elses fancy ones and thought i should get one too! I have since May had 8 bettas in total Shocked

Lunar the VT died of old age (1 1/2 yrs old)
The other 5 including the 2 from Netty and Van died of Columnaris Sad
And the 2 i have now, i have bred!
I have had a Viel Tail, Double Tail, Plakat, 2x Superdelta, 2xCrowntail and a Halfmoon female.

Although VT's are lower classed they have the same personality as the others. I still love Vts! (would still love to see pics! lol)

Well, Max, my BSB (and I said I would never name a b****y fish!), has now got his own home though he isn't showing himself much at the moment as he is having a good old look around in all the plants, coco-caves and he has even has a bit of a glide up the Java Bamboo's!

I am glad it's only Betta people (and I shall be one soon I hope?) that look at this site as if it was anybody else, they would wonder what the hell is going on with all the terms we use? It would sound quite ominous to anyone else, wouldn't it? [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Well, I have now taken the pix but as I said before, he is being a typical Betta and have a decko at his new home, so isn't showing himself much but I have some pretty good shots of his new home and my communtiy tank though, if I can remember how to post them?

Great stuff! Smile

Well you can either use an online account like photobucket/imageshak, or you could host an image from your pc. (hosting is easier)

To host an image;- click the button that has the picture and the floppy disk in front of it. Browse for the appropriate file. Then once its uploaded, copy and paste the IMG code onto here Smile

Hi
All our bettas are kept at 28c/82f. 25c is a bit low. Then during spawning we increase it to 30c.

Hey, dont be embarrassed about your betta, they're all bettas at the end of the day [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

OK, here are the pix as promised. They are not very good as they were only taken with my cell camera. The forst one is my 60L community tank and the second is the 17L Nano where Max now hangs.

Re: Heating for smaller tanks etc

Thank you for the kind comments all of you. As you can see, I only have small aquaria as the flat I live in just isn't big enough to accomodate anything larger, although I do have a 3' and a 4' Juwel that the hospital gave me as the medical guidlines now state no aquariums in wards or anywhere near wards because of the risk of infection (fish carry Salmonella). It's a load of old crap but they have to abide by what the Govt. guidlines say, which is fine by me as I ended up with their tanks!

Once the home dialysis machine is fitted in the flat, I will then know what room I have for the two larger tanks but until that is put in, I cannot do anything with them. At least when they do put the machine in, I will have an abundant supply of RO water as the dialysis machine has to have a filtration/softening unit fitted with it as well, so no more hard water! Dialysis does have it's up sides I suppose? [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

BTW, yes the 60L aquarium has gravel in it and I know that is frowned upon but I hadn't heard about silica sand then, or I would have used it in that as well! Now I use it in anything that will hold fish! It's excellent stuff until it blicks you bath up when you are rinsing it, like it has with me two days ago!

I did ask if I could put a link to this site on my website ages ago but I got no reply, so I threw caution to the wind and bunged it on there anyway?

Nothing wrong with your gravel thumbup Looks smooth enough to me Very Happy

just thought I'd mention about RO water. Will the filter/softener you are getting produce RO or just filtered? With RO water, it needs to have an additive mixed in before it can be used in freshwater. This is because an RO unit strips virtually all trace elements including the good ones. There is a product called RO Right which is a powder to replace these good elements. If the unit you get is filteration rather than an RO unit, it might be worth finding out what it removes. Just in case Very Happy

I will ask the home dialysis technicians on Monday when I am on "the abomination" again as I am not sure myself. All I know is that it filters and softens the water? Will keep you posted though.

I was always of the impression that gravel in an aquarium was a definate no-no as whenever I have mentioned gravel on community fish keeping sites before, they have pretty well bitten my head off as soon as I mentioned the word gravel? I kept trying to explain to them that it is very smooth pebble type pea gravel but no, they just start ranting about how it rips the barbels from Corys mouths etc., which I could understand if it was actual sharp gravel but it isn't. Then they just keep on extolling the vitues of silica sand, so I thought I would get some and try it. I must say, it does look nice, cleans easy and settles immediately.

Yes, it is a female BSB. I was only joking as now everyone knows that I have not one but two BSB! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] I just thought she was so pretty for a BSB female (they usually look so dowdy and stripey), that I just had to get her.

Anyways, here are some pix I just managed to get of Max, my male BSB. Not very good but the best I could do as they don't exactly pose to have their pictures taken? I thought he was solid blue but he some lovely red/mauve in him as well?

lol! Joker Very Happy

Your male there matches your female well Very Happy

The gravel you have looks pretty smooth. I've used that type before and not had a problem. There is gravel that is more like chippings which I wouldn't advise, but yours looks fine.

Re: Heating for smaller tanks etc

Post by mickelmass on Sat Feb 06, 2010 9:29 pm

Thank you. I just have the Clear-Seal tank to set up tomoz with the dividers, heater etc., then that's it as far as tanks go for a while...well, until next payday that is? That's my problem, as soon as it's payday and I see something that the fish might like, I have to buy it! It's the same with the cat as she spoiled rotten as well!

That little 17L tank also has a single blue LED in it for moonlight effect but being only one single LED, it doesn't really do anything at all, although it looked really effective in the picture (obviously to get you to buy it) but it's very weak on it's own. Then I remembered that I had one of those 4 blue LED underwater lights with a sucker on it spare (not the hub ones, although I have some of those as well), which I was going to use in the 60L. So I stuck it the perspex cover plate on the top of the tank. The blue lights won't worry or harm the Betta in any way will they? If so, I shall remove it immediately! It does look very nice at night though and really does look like moonlight breaking the surface of the water, although it's actually under the water!
