Some Betta help.

Post by Gaawie on Sun Aug 16, 2009 10:23 am

Hi everyone, I'm new to Bettas, I'd like to know if there are any specifics about tank size, male to female ratio, tank style and anything else you think a noobie should know.
Thanks

welcome welcome

recommended tank size over 3 gallons for a single male or single female - housing more than one male together or males and females in the same tank can result in death

males and females should not be housed together unless they are in a spawning tank (then only for a few days - with the female seperated first)-- spawning them takes a lot of research and equiptment for dividing males from at 8 weeks of age - whenever the fry start fin nipping and showing aggression - SPAWNING should only be undertaken when fully researched to save fish stress - or death

a group of 4 females can be housed together in a 8 gallon tank (minimum size for 4)- you cant have no more than 4 in that sized tank but you cant have any less either as they need that amount of numbers to spread aggression - the bigger the tank and the greater amount of females you can keep together the better

bettas need a cycled filter and heater - 23-30 degrees
and plenty of water changes with dechlorinated water

i think thats the basics - for more info look here [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Hi gaawie

Agree with Pip, although i would say the temperature should be a minimum of 27c/81f
