Is my filter too strong?

Post by LizzieDee on Thu Aug 27, 2009 7:03 am

More questions!

My tank is cycling using a PF1 filter and looking at the movement on the surface, even with the flow and venturi turned as low as possible, I'm wondering whether this is going to be a bit much for a Betta? The minimum flow is 380l per hour (my tank is 28l).

Would I be better using a less powerful filter (200l per hour) that I've unearthered from my daughter's fishkeeping days? I'm assuming I could just hike out the media in the PF1 and put it in the old filter.

The plants are now taking hold after initially shedding lots of leaves which are now dead in the bottom of the tank. I'm thinking I should vacuum these out of the tank but saw somewhere not to disturb the gravel whilst cycling, so thought I'd get some guidance here as to whether I should have a clean up now or later when it's finished cycling.

Again - TIA! Smile

Yes, I have it positioned in the corner with the outflow pointing at the side of the aquarium.

you could try makeing a spray par that will spread out the current more.

Alot of ours have a piece of syphoning tube attached to the filter. We make holes all along the tube and block the end with some filter sponge.

Hmm - if the filter is too strong perhaps I'll just change it over, rather than trying to modify the PF1.

Do you think I should clean the gravel now? The plants look as though they are getting well established and don't look as though they'll be shedding anymore.

This is a pic of one of our divided tanks. Obviously you wouldn't need it so long but shows how the tube just pushes onto the outlet. Very easy.

you can also seal the end of the tube by getting it hot and melting it sealed - squash it when its really hot
