Any innovative ideas for dividers?

Post by lilacamy931 on Mon Aug 31, 2009 3:10 pm

Still deciding + or x. But either way haven't found anything that is big enough! Tried ringing Hobbycraft local (had the most idiotic woman on the phone..hello? errr yes this is hobbycraft? - I guess im being mean she is having to work the bank holiday poor thing). So apart from a good source of very large holed plastics or tapestry sheeting that you know of, is there anything else? confused I am confuddled!

Everything is sorted in my head for now, except the location of sheeting, formation and how to interpret the heater and filter in the least intrusive way into the tank! Hope not doing too badly thumbup Can't wait till get paid yay! bounce

Only thing found so far is:

which would be £21 odd for two sheets of 50x50cm.

I bought these from ebay for my newest tank, cheap enough to cut them up. I could have made 4 dividers from 2 sheets, but I buggered up the cut so only got 1 per sheet.

Next thing is buying holders to keep them tight in place. They DO stick right if cut slightly bigger(half a cm or so) but for waterchanges etc, I need to be careful with them in this way.

I'd still go for pennplax dividers, purely based on the rigidity of them. One thing to bear in mind when using non-aquatic plastic is whether its going to release any toxins??

Same chance as everything else you could potentially put in the fish tank, imo Van. Like a lot of people don't like "fish tank" ornaments, so create their own. Not sure what toxins pure plastic could release though?

The only thing on pennplax is the largest I have found is Super Penn Plax that are 12"by 18" so have a problem how to get all the four middle pieces to match up..

Plastics can release all sorts of toxins, especially when heated and submersed with long periods. Thats why people shouldn't really put things in the tank that are not designed for aquarium use. That, or the compounds used for other items can be identified, which is not easy to find out. Its all about cutting down the risk factors.
Its like with my marine tank- i run off ro water into 25ltr drums. These drums have to be "food safe", otherwise chemicals can leach into the water.

The tank is 18x18 if i remember correctly :D So just cut slits half way across the dividers so they slot together. Obviously they're not going to reach across the diagonals though No

Ah no I did think of this but then they wont get submerged much in the sand and won't reach high enough up the tank or give much leeway to stop jumpers. I was hoping for 12-14" of water otherwise much less water for them. Did think of sideways Wink Thanks Van x

p.s. sorry to be a pain! If all else fails, will go with these xx

Thought of another way :D Different to the one i just pm'd you about.

Get some tubing, say half an inch diameter, cut it to the depth you need. Then carefully cut slits half way down, and cut slits half way up the dividers. Then just slot them in :D

They'll be easy to remove too:) Thinking about it, might be best to use wider diameter tubing as the slits on the dividers will only be a quarter of an inch. The wider the better.

So you have a length of tube to that of the tank that is really thick and relatively wide. For the first divider, cut half up from the bottom and do that to one sie of the tube to slot in. The next divider at 90 degrees to the first cut half from the top and also correspond with the tub at the right place. Third divider bottom again and 90 degrees bottom on the tubing and then fourth top divider and tube, so the tube never gets cut inhalf! Hope I have explained that as envisaged Van!

Though second idea was to sealant the dividers along their edges into a square perhaps with tubing down the middle for support then have a really solid base for the middle!
