fancy fish

Post by liz2 on Thu Sep 10, 2009 4:29 pm

my fancy goldfish have been a bit listless. Had a water change a week or so ago but I noticed today both the pure black ones have got a white sheen on them. I am treating for velvet, but typical they do look bad and I am going away on Saturday! anything else I can do,?

there is a filter in the tank, funny enough the water went really cloudy before I cleaned them out. I would imagine all the fish have velvet but as the 2 are black you can see it on them better...

white sheen sounds more like slime disease
could be a bacterial infection
velvet is goldy coloured dust on them

Slime disease is very common in fish and the cause is usually the chilodonella, costia, or cyclochaeta parasites. Symptoms include a grey.white coating on the body or fins, scratching, frayed fins and shimmying. Commercial remedy of malachite green and frequent water changes can be used to treat this disease. Once the disease in the fish is eradicated, the tank should be thoroughly cleaned.

a week!! I am using interpet 7 for anti slime and velvet. My sister is coming up Monday to feed the birds and tortoise but she isnt in to fish! I could measure meds out though and ask her to put it in the tank! I have to take my african land snails with us as no one likes them enough to feed them!

You see how much trouble those snails are Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Like Pip says then, nice big water change before you go, and treat again just before you go.
