Filters just arrived, help with media etc.

Post by jasminek on Sat Sep 12, 2009 9:01 am

Hey! My new stingray filter just arrived! Could i use half of my goldfishes cycled media and put it into the new filter along with the new media thats already in?
Also stingray are underwater filters but i usually have it bubbling because if the fish swims upto it it really sends then flying lol, what do you think under or above waterline?
Thanks!

Hi
Putting some media from your other filter will be fine, just dont take too much out the mature filter otherwise the filter will crash. Just take about a third out.
Never used stingrays myself, so i'll leave that question to someone else [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

what i do with the stingrays is remove the filter cartridges and replace them with sponge or floss - the cartridges contain zeolite and carbon and both these are useless after a few days

Also not worth the money to keep replacing the cartridges - filter works a lot better with just sponge and floss in place of the cartridges (the little grey ones)

just remove the cartridges - and leave the sponge - the cartridges contain the carbon and zeolite so cant be used when medicating

you could add the media from the goldfish filter to where the cartridges come out from

Im very confused lol! Whats the difference between sponge and cartridge? In the filter is half the goldfish media, its like a big black spong what slots in the bottom of filter and in a gap when you open it

throw them away hun they are only useful for a couple of days and then stop working - fill the gaps with sponge or floss

they are designed to remove ammonia and tannings etc - but they only work for a couple of days and then are useless
not many people that use stingrays use the cartridges
