160 litre - sorority?

Post by lilacamy931 on Sat Sep 26, 2009 6:15 pm

Well the puffs are to be rehomed this week and I was going to take a break with the big tank, but thinking of a sorority or nice community as it is a grogeous tank and needs more action going on in it. Is a 160 litre adequate for females (in terms of depth? How many females would be recommended in total and what would you recommend adding in blocks of? 5's? Also I have never seen a store locally in Bournemouth sell bettas, except for me pestering Netty thumbup and others on here for their girlies to be posted, how do you others go about it??? Or be honest and would you recommend a community?

Couple of queries on sorority, know (from chatting to Melly I love you ) you take out rearrange the tank and reintroduce everyone again. Would plastic cups you can buy in packs of 20 be ok to get everyone out? Also are their many problems with aggression? Or is it a case you rearrange, reintroduce and have the use of breeding traps, etc. Lastly with feeding a large amount of females, do you pop in the adequate amount of pellets in and leave them to it? Very silly questions I know, but as always need the infor to fit in my head!

At first with all my girls there was aggression for a few hours but after that all has been peaceful! 160L would be brilliant! You could have about 20-30 females i'd say. Obviously only starting with about 5 then work your way up! You need alot of tall plants & objects too!

Feeding wise i give them the correct amount per female but spread them across the tank so that everyone has a chance to get some, i occasionally add a few extra just in case! A sorority sounds great in a tank that size, mines in a 125 litre but i only have 7 girls at the moment. When introducing new girls as wel as the rearranging etc i feed them when they are added, it's just to distract them from fighting and i've never had any problems so far.

It is something I am toying with, my partner is quite excited about a community, so may sway that way...(blasphemy I know!)

To be honest i've been debating setting up a small community as that's what i had in my sorority tank oringinally and now have a spare river reef sitting empty...... Either way i'm sure your tank will be great!

aw thanks crystal! I of course am edging female sorority but perhaps it would be a good chance for me and my partner to set something up together, he enjoys the bettas (Calcifer especially!) but has always wanted to do a colourful community. So having a small think may go this route..

I would only take all the females out if you had a major aggression problem like my naughty girls LOL but as they only need to be out for 30 minutes plastic cups would ber fine just keep the cats away LOL.

Daz sometimes has females also there are a few places near us I've seen females but they are always in a bad way due to the way the LFS keep them. But if you wanted to take a look I'm more than happy to drive you around the area for a afternoon LOL.
