What are betta Imbellis?

Post by aly_starh on Mon Sep 28, 2009 4:42 pm

Looking at TriMar and noticed Betta Imbellis, are they wild?
Would they be ok in my tank? (65l (divided into 4))

Do they eat the same food as normal Betta Splendens?
Searched in google but got no info Sad

Help please! Smile

Imbellis are a wild type, similar to splendens.. bubble nesters but do your research on imbellis....splenden, smaragdina and mahachai are similar species
before you buy... check if they're interbred mixed or genuine wild type (as in full imbellis).

I'd a person ask me about them yesterday ( he was going to import them from europe) the picture he showed me was definately not true bred but a cross breed... too much copper, bulkier bodied than the natural form.

As van said Wild man is the best person to ask and he might also point you in the right direction for a reputable uk breeder of them if he doesn't have any himself.

Well, there are over 60 species of Betta, not just splendens so imbellis are a species in their own right and very cool, IMO Smile

I dont have any spare just now but should really breed them again as I have had a few people ask me about them too... If anyone wants to tell me they are interested now that might spur me on LOL

Cheers

em, as i said, there are 60 odd species of Betta and not all will live happily male and female together all the time...

For imbellis a pair can be kept together all of the time, even post spawning as long as there is a lot of plants and hiding places of needed. They can also be kept as a group and I recommend that people get half a dozen and keep them together, you can watch for pairs forming and remove them for spawning.

I keep and breed a pair in a 12x8x8 inches tank

minimum for 6 should be a 18x12x12"

Price varies... sexed pair from a name location could be as much as £20 - 30

I sell them generally for about 3 - 5 quid each, depending on size, locality sex etc

cheers
Colin
