Any ideas of glass catfish?

Post by lilacamy931 on Sun Oct 18, 2009 6:48 pm

LOL I seem to be taking up this section at the moment. Got 3 of these two weeks ago and then added 3 more on Thursday. They seem to be eating now and also swimming a little more about though incredibly shy (understandable). What I need help with now is one today noticed has white opaqueness runniung through the body that was not there before and another has a spot of it, not raised from what I can see but internal. I know sick or stressed ones get these and usually there is nothing to be done. Is this true? I have one spare 5gallon to try but would probably need to put the shoal in there as lone ones do not do well from what I have read. Sorry to ask so many questions at the mo, sick fish, baby fish and new additions all happening!

i would put the individual one in there hun - they do fine on their own while being treated - i used myaxzin with one of mine took 3 lots of treatment but finally ok - you need to act quickly hun as they soon go down hill fast once they turn opaque - raise the temp to 28-30 degrees and add the myazxin (spelling)

Have you got plenty of plants - they love Java fern as its a natural plant where they originate from - and they need a clump of plants that they can hide behind if they feel threatened in any way

I have 12 of these - the larger the number the better they interact and will soon start surface feeding and comming out a lot more - mine rarely are hidden now they are swimming around in their shoal all the time .in the open .

They are great fish - one of my shoal developed brain damage a few months ago and spins around but never shows stress lines and still eats fine he's just very spinney lol

Thanks for the advice pip! There is lots of foliage in there, though it will be better once it has padded out. They also have two cave (one being a tree root) that they like and keeps them hidden even from me. Right will get him out now and put in the 5 gallon and try, thanks for the advice as not many peeps reallly sure what to do! Have fresh bottle of myaxzin so hopefully can save this fellow. Some of them come out in the open on occasion but the rest stay hidden so will watch this space and perhaps consider upping their numbers.
Thanks again pip xxx

welcome hun - they do take a long while to settle in though so i would only up the numbers (if you can ) if they dont relax and start comming out into the open in 4-6 weeks time
Try not to fart around with the tank deco too often for the next few weeks will help them to settle better - once they are settled they dont seem to mind moving stuff around the tank

good luck with him and let me know how it goes :
