Post by The young one on Sun Oct 18, 2009 7:51 pm

Hi, would I be able to keep a male betta with some sparkling gouramis in a 32l tank?

I just looked at a sparkling gourami caresheet, and they live in rice paddy fields with bettas so it should be alright...I think?

Hi
I realise they both come from the same environment, but there's a massive difference between a 50 acre paddy field and a 32l tank. I would advise not to try it. The sparkling gourami also has visual similarities to bettas so not really a good choice:(

I thought having anatabnoids (cant spell sorry!) of same species was a no go. From all the resources I have read I wouldnt risk it..

oh, ok thanks for the feedback, i won't do it then. Do you know of any wild bettas that would be able to live with a male betta in a 32l tank?

I wouldn't like to say? Not a wilds person really. However, in a 32L you will struggle due to the size of the tank. The male betta may not tollerate any mates:(

I have sparking gouramis in with my wilds tank - rajas , simorums etc - and they have been getting on very well - all 15 sparkling gouramis still alive and kicking and have been for months
They do breed but the fry get eaten very quickly - even have endlers in with them and all still alive and well

Have kept them in with betta splendens before aswell and as they are very disimilar to bettas they seem to ignore them

I wouldnt keep the sparklings in under a 30" tank though as i have found them to enjoy the space as they inquisitve fish once settled in and explore the whole of the tank

You can see a sparkling gourami on this link. You can see from that how it could be easily mistaken for a female VT or even a male Spade Tail. I wouldn't personally risk it.
