Experiment

Post by pippoodle on Fri Nov 06, 2009 3:35 pm

After seeing how calm betta imbellis were i decided to add a male to my female splendens sorority tank
This was done 3-4 months ago and i have had no problems what so ever
I was initially worried that the females would attack the male but no there has been no squabbling at all - apart from the normal squabbliing between the girls
The thing i have found is that the girls are always eggy though due to the male being in the tank with them

I thought long and hard about doing this and as imbellis are normally kept with females of their own kind without fighting i thought it should be ok to try it with female splendens

I'm not telling people to go and add a male splendens to their sorority tanks as this would be a no no and neither to add a male splendens and a male imbellis -

i've had some people who have told me it's wrong to add the male to the sorority tank but it has worked out fine . I think cos he is an imbellis and they are such a calm breed of betta thats why it has worked .

tank size 300 litre - heavilly planted - lots of caves and floating plants

It's only worked due to the nature of betta imbellis - they are fine to share with other male imbellis's in a large enough tank

I have 3 males and 2 females in corner 400 litre tank - had to move the other male over as with only 2 females (lost 2 when i first got them ) i didnt want any problems in that tank

The imbeliis's are excellent type of betta hoping to get more females Smile to add to the wild tank - all the wilds listed in my siggy share the same tank with no problems

no imbellis he's been in there about 3 months now - was initially worried the female splendens would pick on him but they havent and just ignore him apart from when he builds a nest he has a female nudging him - they do wrap but the eggs get eaten

PLEASE i wish everyone would understand that i used betta imbellis male NOT betta splendens male
this is really upsetting that some other people think i would put a male splendens in a tank with female splendens

If you do internet research you find out that male and female imbellis can be kept happily together and many people have kept male imbellis and female splendens together with no problems as i have been doing

I dont personally agree with this as in my own experience and i'm sure others would agree the females can be as bad for aggression as males. this 'experiment' is probally very stressfull for the male and like with putting splendens together may end up in disaster.

I dont really agree with experimenting with fish in this way I feel they should be kept in the best environment for them adn with fish that will make compatable companions as well as we can (I know all combinations can go wrong but why experiment?)

Fish are there for enjoyment and pleasure but we should also have thier best intrests at heart as we are responsible for them. sunny
