Filter transfer?

Post by lilacamy931 on Sun Nov 29, 2009 11:51 am

Hello All I have pygmy cories and they are in this tank:

I have just jigged things around and want to put them in here:

There is this filter:

And the question is, at the moment I have four lamps in the second tank keeping filter alive. I want to move the lamps to my commuinity, so I can empty the tank get it into position and either next weekend or the weekend after rescape so it has sand, reinstall plants and then put my 6 adult cories in along with the fry I have in netting and release them in to the main body of the tank once grown more. For now can I put the filter above onto the little tank to keep the bacteria alive? Or is this wrong to do?
p.s. (the filter has been scrubbed since this pic!)

To keep the bacteria *alive* it should be placed in 'any' dechlorinated water. Do you feel that the current is strong? If so, then just pop it into a bucket, but if the current is fine, then you can put it in the Cory tank Smile

My main concern is to keep the bacteria fed as there will be a one to two week lapse before it is fitted to the main tank again, i think I shall put on the cory tank Wink

I would try it in the little tank and see how it goes:) If you have it running in a bucket you will need to feed it with fish food to keep the bacteria alive. You may lose some bacteria using the bucket technique, but there should still be enough to keep it going.

If you dont add the fish, you can just put in *fish Food* leave it in there for about 15 minutes or slightly more then remove it.

Aly, you need to leave the fish food in to break down. Its this breaking down of the food that will produce the ammonia needed to feed the filter:)

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Is adding food and leaving it for a few minutes for ammonia not the same as adding the fish in for the ammonia source?

If there are no fish in say, a bucket with a cycled filter, then the food needs to break down and rot to produce ammonia. If you remove the fish food from a fishless tank/bucket after a few minutes, the food wouldn't have had chance to start breaking down to produce ammonia:)
