Am i a boy?

Post by timkel on Wed Dec 02, 2009 8:55 pm

Looks like its happened again.Theres a lot of dancing going on between 2 of my 10 girls.I am almost certain this one could be a boy.Cant see an egg spot but theres no sign of any bubble nesting either.Opinions would be gratefully recieved.

I can't see a visible egg casing so would go for male but a clearer close up pic would be much better.

Yours does look very similar and I can't make out an egg casing which is usually very clear in pale bodied females.

Oh and SNAP [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Can you pop her into a breeding net for a few days with some plant and see if there's any nest made.

Also is there any flaring? She has a very pointed anal fin which would point to being a young PK male too.

Yes she flares quite a bit at the blue girl and has quiet a big beard.I think i know its a boy,but am hopeing someone will say its a girl lol. Both of them are chasing anyone away that goes near them. The rest of them all have prominent egg spots, exept her/him.When we picked them out at the lfs(we bought 2 cambos at the same time)we studied them for ages and picked 2 with egg spots, but when they went to net them, they all came to the front lol and i think they must have got the wrong one.(all cambos)

They same thing happend to us with Candy until she matured and started creating havoc in the tank. The trouble is that the egg spot isn't 100% proof of being female as juvenile males will show this too. It's very difficult to tell young pk males and females apart and quite often you'll end up with males from the lfs.

Our lfs took one of the males back and Candy we sold.

the body looks beefy and more male to me. more strenght and muscle along the top line and sides then you see in most females. I also do not see an egg spot and the beard from the underside pictures looks very much like all the pk males I have picked up by accident. the fins I think will grow and look more male and manly in time.

update

Post by timkel on Fri Jan 01, 2010 6:45 pm

Well we had a lot of dancing around with the blue one again, the next morning her fins were badly ripped,so he has moved into my community tank.Later in the day the blue one and a couple of others were laying eggs on the bottom, then fighting to see who could eat them 1st lol.

definitely looks like a boy to me so worth the move, those last pictures you took long ventricals and pointed anal fin as Netty said makes me think male instantly. your girls are probably nippy because they tend to re-jig the hierarchy when there's one less female (in your case one less male! ) or one more female so there's a little jostle! good that you saw some release eggs now you know for sure those one's are girls!!
