Congrats on starting something new! I wanted to start a marine tank a while back but was told on another forum (*sigh*) that my tank was too small for anything marine (10 gallon). Good luck!

Post by aly_starh on Sun Dec 27, 2009 6:37 pm

Thanks! Smile

ok so....I will not be looking into corals till around 2-3 months after the tank is up and running. Or will i.. scratch . Even then it will just be soft corals;- Till i upgrade the following year to a bigger tank (heres hoping! Very Happy )

So... I will be mainly looking into Mushrooms and Zoa's (most probs). The current light is ((T8-15W X1)) and i can add a Flourecent Compact 9W to it, which will total 24W in 65L. Would this lighting be ok for the corals i mention. scratch Or should i add another T8 starter? I dont want to go into *advanced* lighting atm, like MH's, PC's or T5's as i will be upgrading in 2011. Very Happy

Or, are there any other corals i can keep with 24W, bear in mind, *easy* corals Very Happy

Hope you can help!
oh and sorry for all the questions...!

If you place the Zoas and Mushies up on the LR, they should ok. My Zoas and Mushies would grow at substrate level in a 20" deep tank Very Happy

With what lighting? Just seen some peoples nanos on UR Shocked they have so many corals!

Hoping to upgrade soon anyways, but i might look into better lighting after all the main marine equipment is out of the way. Rolling Eyes (hopefully)

Bummer No

Shop around, it may be that an LFS further away is cheaper and may offset the fuel costs.

In my tank although i had 120w of T5 lighting, the tank was 20" deep and had glass sliders between the lights and water, and the Zoas at sand level were really good. You can normally find a small piece of LR with a few Zoas on for about £10 or less. At one of my locals, they were doing 3 x small frags for £15 Very Happy

There's always going to be people who say "this wont work or that wont work". Obviously the bigger the tank the better, but 65L is totally feasible. Just because the person you Pm'd is a mod, it doesn't make him any more knowledgeable than anyone else, and its just his view. The thing is, the more people you ask for advice from, the more views you will get.
You know people have smaller nano's than the one you are planning. Small marine tanks are harder work and need extra attention.

Ok, another question.

Do you all have phosphate removers? I think someone mentioned they did? Cant remember.

Do you suggest i get some Rowasphos? how do i use it? Just put it in net and place it next to the powerhead? How long does it last? Will i need a phosphate test kit aswell?

thanks Very Happy

Hi
You shouldn't really have a problem with Phosphates with the Berlin system. Just test for it as a routine test. As long as you dont overstock or over feed you should be fine.

Just for info - Rowaphos needs to placed in a filter bag and put in a high water turnover area.
