A wrap and eggs...

Post by emeleeliggett on Sat Jun 06, 2009 12:42 am

With our gourami!!

I happened to look over at the tank and witnessed my two gourami spawning over in a corner. There was not bubblenest and it was near the output of the filter! The silly fish obviously weren't prepared! Most of the eggs were eaten by other members of the tank but oddly one of my female betta is guarding the rest of the eggs and allowing no one near! I guess she thinks they are her's for some reason!

I don't expect any fry from it but at least I have my answer, I DO have a male and female gourami...

I don't really have the space either :Embarassed: but the next time they spawn I'll try and save the eggs by putting them in a breeder net.

Do you have any pictures of your paradise fish? I would love to see them! I heard you can get a betta and paradise fish to interbreed... I don't think the offspring are fertile but it was an interesting thought!

:D

if you want to try and get some babies if they spawn again use a super clean tupperware container float it on the water surface with like an inch of water in it, you may get some fry to hatch that way. Ive done it loads of times with my bettas. though if you want them to survive to adult hood that would mean a fry tank and fry food.

Modaz-Too bad you lost your best male though it's good your others are doing better. I'd love to see any pictures you have! :D I know that in nature the two species would not combine, but I've always wanted to try it if I could find a LFS that sells paradise fish.

Netty-Thanks! I was so happy the new one turned out to be a female! The poor little male was so lonely and now all he does all day long is flirt with his new lady friend! His courtship is just as interesting to watch as betta because he does not nip and hurt her. littleangel

Newfishy-I'm sure they'll try again! Rolling Eyes They seem to be crazy for each other! Are the fry bigger or smaller than betta fry? I've never had any spawn in my tanks so I would have no idea the size of gourami fry! :Embarassed:

Well a couple of days ago I looked in my community tank and saw this! I love you

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

A nest full of gourami eggs. All day the poor fellow moved it around and chased off all the other fish! Then yesterday I looked in and there are these TINY little black specks in the bubbles. The pictures are very hard to see but think betta babies except all black.

This is the daddy chasing off unwanted visitors. There are only about 20 that I could see today, but it is such a huge tank that they could be anywhere!

Enjoy!

*Edit* This is not the same spawn as the earlier post. This is a second or third!

Netty-I know, they are all black and much harder to see than little white betta fry! I'm sure some will make it, and if not the dad and mom gourami have already done it again!

Storm-They're spawning quite well, that's the problem. An entire half of the tank is reserved for his nest and he's quite violent to the other fish! I can't wait to see them grow up though!

Thanks everyone! Yeah, it's strange because as soon as the fry are free-swimming (about 2-3 days after eggs appear) then the "happy couple" go at it again! I'm going to have to put one of them in a separate tank or I'll be overrun with gouramis! If he wasn't so aggressive to everyone else then I wouldn't mind.

So as of now I think there are a good 50+ babies in the community tank so I'm sure some will survive. Cool
