the age old - boy or girl??

Post by Haych on Tue Dec 22, 2009 9:59 pm

right, got this guy/gal from a member on here with a group of six other girls.

Now, when I first saw him/her I thought, thats a boy, but then I saw a definate Ovi thingy-ma-jig. Left him/her in the sorority.

Watching TV and noticed him/her flaring LOTS at another female, SEEMED to have a full beard, but wont flare for me now!

I have put him/her in his/her own section, girls colours have come up now s/he has been removed. Strangely enough, the one I removed is the only one without any tears in fins

any help appreciated!

I would normally say female but the venticals are long and the excess flaring and seeming full beard makes me suspicious and the caudal fin is long in some of those pics, I didnt ask though how old is he/she?

lol oh dear, dont confuse me anymore crying

i have no clue on age at all.

i thought girls were thinner and males had fatter bellies?

right... i think i am missing some pics of girls... theyre hard to tell apart, without literally seperating them and photoing, so if you could give me a general idea, i can get somewhere!

(some are of the same fish more than once)

That's a really difficult one....cheers Haych lol!

The thing is that females can also put on quite a display of flaring at times, the only thing missing is the bit under the chin which a male would have.

Some of the pics look like there might be an egg casing but others not.

There's definately something going on though for all the others to have such badly nipped fins. It's just a case of finding the culprit which can take a while. One way of checking would be to put him/her into a clear floating breeding trap in a males tank and see how they interact and whether breeding stripes appear. I've done this before where the female dropped eggs within 48 hours but it doesn't always happen so quickly.

The yellow girl is definately female is the red fish in your second batch of pictures the same one? first and second i would say female as well Id be suspicious of the red one right now but as netty said you could try the trap idea!

ok thanks guys, i had better find a clear trap then! Williow, the second batch is a new red one, there is something like 3 blue, 2 red, 1 gold, 1 purpleish.

i put him/her back in the group, and s/he is definately the one causing trouble as s/he is the only one without any nips !

i THINK its a female. when s/he falred (as soon as i put him/her back in) it SEEMED to be a loveheart shape rather than circular

will keep you updated!

Van is just winding you up and having a joke ! its no one's fault its just one of those things you may just have a very aggressive female on your hands, we're actually finding due to breeding sometimes the male/female differentials are becoming harder and harder to negotiate!
