Pregnant?

Post by lilacamy931 on Fri Feb 05, 2010 7:57 pm

Hello peeps
I recently got some guppies, two females and one male, it has been suggested that the females may already be pregnant. I keep finding conflicting information some say the female always have the gravid spot and this is normal and other sites state it is an indication on how pregnant they are?
Here are some poor piccys!

yh there pregnant. if male and female where mixed at any time they will be pregnant they dont evan need males because they will store the sperm for upto 6 months. she dose look quite far pregnant but it will be another week or 2 before she will drop.

the fry proberly wont be his for another few months.
ways to tell when the females are about to drop are
they will have a dark gravid spot and you should be able to see the frys eyes.
the females bellies will be a square shape it normally squares of a day or 2 before the female will have them.
they tend to stay away from the male s and other fish.
they will hang around at the surface resting on plants heaters filter ect.

i saw your post about wanting guppies on the other forum and ive got a load of endlers fry you could have had but i aint got the stuff to post them so it would have beeen quite expencsive and i wasnt sure if you would want endlers in with guppies so i didnt bother posting :[

there quite easy to keep and ones you have had them for a while it will be alot easier to tell when there guna have them.
shame i have about 14 8 males 6 females and im only guna keep a few pairs. i have 5 albinos aswell she must of been pregnant with them when i got her. there cool to watch grow up same as guppies you just notice little specs of colour on them and within a few days they have full colour. the babies are only about 1cm without tail and alredy have the full colour.

Aw thanks hon again for the offer, it is really sweet of you, Im sure you will find good homes closer to you xx

I have some more updated pics if it helps interpret roughly how many weeks?
here is the separated female, she paces the back of the tank quite alot and think this is because she wishes to be with others on the other side of the divide

And the other female still in with the male

Thanks Kizno (I know the pics are really bad). For now will keep the two females together as they like each others company and the male separate so he doesnt pester them too much. Thanks for the guidance x

it not really there bad photos its just hard to tell from pics no matter how good they are becasue its hard to see how big and round they are. you can leave the male in with them because theres 2 females he should be alright if not try getting 1 more female 3f to every 1m is a good ratio. the male can also help to show when shes going to have the babies because they normally chase the female that is about to drop more than the others.

thats fine they should have babies about every month. are they the only fish in the tank. if you want hen to live longer you can drop the temp down to about 22c but they wont have babies as often and the babies will grow slower but they are supossed to be healthier because they have more time to develop. some of your corys might prefere it at about that temp aswell :]

My mam keeps and breeds guppies and swords. When mama guppy is ready to give birth, she'll literally look like she is about to pop!! Smile I feel for them. Wink

I will most likely be dropping the temp for them, though they are likely to move as the cories move in (then again moving to cooler tank so should be good) at the moment they are on their own Smile I have a feeling these females are pretty young so unsure when a look of popping is going to be!!!

Possibly a sign but the male was pecking at the rear end of one of the females where I would expect the babies to come out, have moved the male away now and left two females together with plenty of plants and floating plants and hope this is enough to keep them from being eaten, really hope that they give birth soon Smile
