help with housing fry

im trying to breed my betta, if i am succesful would i be able to keep the fry in jars etc. for around amonth because i am only 15 and cant really afford to buy tons of fishtanks etc. ive heard that they can live in pint glasses but will not thrive as well, so surely it should be safe as a short term option Smile

Pint cups aren't suitable EVER!!!

Ideally you should wait until you can afford to breed them properly with the proper equipment but..

If you're really stuck for funds and are gonna try breeding them anyway...

get an 80ltr storage tub... use gravel and undergravel filter plus a heater then chop the bottoms and tops of 2litre bottles coke/fanta type . You should be able to fit about 15 2ltr bottles per tub.

They will need hoovered and water top ups daily!

This will be adequate for about a month if solely jarring fry ready to sell but def not suitable for long term housing.

that sounds great thanks....when i finally get a divided tank, if the males can see each other willl the constant threat displays stress them out,, thanks Smile

They definately will at first... but they usually adjust to nearby males after time.. (you still might get the odd one who never does though so it's always worth having a back up tank)

Do make sure you keep your divider atleast 3-4" about water level or have a good fitting lid ( with ventilation) Bettas will jump!

When I say jump I do mean that... they do need covered tanks.. but with a divided tank many a person has lost a prized betta due to jumping the divider and getting into a fight or the gap where the heater lead goes in they find fish gone only to discover it leaped to the floor.

are different bettas more notorius for jumping, i have a bright red halfmoon, i also wanted to know wether the bettas 'viciousness' is genetic, fo example are bettas more viscious dependant on their colour and if i bred two very placid bettas would i have placid spawn,, thanks for any help

they are all jumpers... shorter finned though the higher they can jump
wild types are top escape artists, then the pks... crowntails are probably the lowest jumpers (males anyway... female s all have short fins and can swim fast to do the leap!)

Every betta has a different personalty... but yes some colour types can be a bit more agressive than others... reds and blacks i've found most agressive personally and crowntails

You won't know if you have placid bettas until you have them and they are happy and comfortable in their surroundings i'm afraid. But I would assume if you bred two placid bettas you should have a generally more placid spawn but still expect to have a good few with attitude.

Haha.....the short finned plakats are notorious jumpers Very Happy

Haven't noticed any particular colour being more jumpy than others, but have heard that Reds tend to be more aggressive? However, i have not witnessed this.

Crowntails appear to be more aggressive, but believe that it is down to the fact they can swim faster than halfmoons. PK's are thought to be more aggressive still, but the PK's we have bred have been really calm.

you must try breeding black pk/hmpk!! They are vicous and jumpers!!!

My Jack (super black hmpk) got his name for a reason.. jack the ripper!!

you try to feed him and he leaps for your face lol

vicious as anything!! I'm just glad he's not bigger!

Yeh, we have done two PK spawns. Diesel was head butting the chimney to get at her, but once released he was fine. Kindralth the hmpk was very well behaved too Very Happy
