do they have to be in the presence of a female to start making bubllle nests, or do they just do it when they feel like it?

Happy boys then Liz [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

There doesn't have to be a female present at all for males to build bubblenests and in fact some females will build them too.

Not all females will but we've had a couple that made huge nests when they were very young. Makes sexing babies even harder when they do that lol

If you have floating plants they will quite often nest under those. Some think they make them when they are happy and obviously when spawning you hope they will build them then too.

Some males will never build nests. It's all down to the individual fish really but always a nice surprise when you do see one [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Yep....there's no point in releasing the female until a good nest is there or the eggs will just end up on the bottom of the tank.

Both pairs need to be conditioned for at least 2 weeks before spawning. While the female is in the chimney for two days she will get eggy. Some females will get eggy without a male present and some will drop eggs without a male being present.

I just bought some amazon frogbit today and my boys are having a whale of a time bubbling underneath it! It's so cute watching them do it isn't it?

I got it from a little fish place in central london... was a small portion (like enough little rooted bits to cover my hand) for £2.

It's the first time i've seen it in a shop myself - maybe try ebay? If you can't find any I could go back and see if they have more and try posting it to you?
