what a steal!

Post by flip on Sat Feb 13, 2010 5:58 pm

i just got a 55 gallon tank with a stand, hoods, lights, decor, substrate, chemicals, food, heater, filter, and extra filter media for $75 USD!! i felt like i was robbing the guy! and he wanted me to take his 2 plecos and 3 pirahnas(spelling?). and it was all next to new, he had just got it all in the summer. so it is only a few months old. all because he was moving.

i didnt think you could keep anything with pirahnas, but he had two plecos. but i didnt take the fish, i dont know a thing about pirahnas so thought i had better not! the only thing i have to go in the tank at the moment are my baby snails and the 5 i just ordered off of ebay, as well as the danio fry till they are big enough to not be eaten in the comm tank. that way i can get my 10 gal. free for betta's. not sure yet what to put in the 55, i just saw it in the paper and couldnt pass it up! felt like i should have been wearing a ski mask when i picked it up [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

i would LOVE to get an oscar but im not sure if they can go in a 55 or if they need more and they would more than likely eat the snails. since i am going to be selling the snails i cant have them eaten. i have a friend who has four oscars in her 75 gall. they are awesome fish!! gourami's though i have been thinking of...i like them a lot too. as well as bosemani(sp?) rainbows...anyone have more ideas for me to look into? Lots of small sparkly fish lol. I kid I kid. One thing to think of is the larger the fish the longer the lifespan, most of the time. My parents had Oscars that outlived cats and dogs of theirs. So what ever you get try and think about the long term care and health requirements of your beautiful fish.
And oh yes what a steal! The only thing you may think about replacing is the heater, used sometimes banged around heaters are a little less trustworthy.

hehe yeah i hear oscars live for a long time! we wont ever be moving again, well i wont, i will stay here with whoever would move in...i hate moving and vow never again!!! not too worried about the life span. im going to keep an eye on the heater, but he said he got it, put it in and never moved it. it was still stuck to the tank wall when i put it in my house [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] he had just drained the tank for me when i got there. even saved the media for me! oh and dont worry, whatever i end up getting i will make sure to find out everything i need to know about the care before i ever even get the fish!!

Not the biggest of the gouramis but look into the sparkling gouramis, they are amazingly colourful and not aggressive to other fish. With a tank that size you could have a fair few pairs going as long as planted up! (Have a google thumbup )

Rainbowfish are great, how about killifish gardneri? They are fantastically colourful!

ooo i though you ment just little snails. im not to sure it dependce on the actuall fish some might nip at them rather than eat them like the puffers will and quite a few proberly will. what fish are you thinking about?

i just started thinking about what to put in there, but thought about bosemini(sp?) rainbows or gouramis. but still looking into all of my options. id like an oscar, but im pretty sure with the size it will get that it would do too much damage to the snails.... oh and i need to see the availibility of the fish in the US, i know some that are easy to find in the UK arent so easy to get here.

if you did go for the oscar that would be the only fish you could have in the tank you might be able to get in a plec depending of filteration.
if i was you i would go for somethink like
a pair of firemouths
pair of blue acara
3 pictus
2 angelfish
10 bosemani rainbowfish

you could swap round a few of the cichlids and catfish depending on what you can get but them sort of numbers should be good

ok so i did a quick google of the fish in your last post for some gen. info and the pictus wont work due to needing softer water than i have but the acaras seen like they would be a good match, would they eat my danios? the rainbow fish from my skimming it seens would and i dont have enough room for all the danios in the 20 gal anymore as they are spawning and i keep the fry i find. i dont have the heart not to!

edit: googling some of the fish in your other post now, the keyholes are interesting too. i like the apistos but i saw they eat snails:(
