how do you breed apple snails?

Post by aly_starh on Sun Feb 14, 2010 7:37 pm

I have 4 apple snails. 2 Golden/Ivory and 2 Purple candystripe.

I have had them for about 4 weeks now, there were small when i got them. Now they are the size of, well inbetween a 1p and a 2p. lol

How do i breed them?

thanks

You need a male and a female for them to mate. There's not really anything to do to breed them, as long as there is both sexes present they will get on with it themselves when they are ready. They will mate, then 7 days (i think) later they will lay a clutch of eggs above the waterline. If the eggs are fertile they will hatch anywhere from about 2 weeks after being laid. If they haven't hatched after about 6 weeks break the clutch open, if it's gooey inside it was infertile. I find with mine every other clutch is fertile, i have 10 clutches in my tank at the moment.

Sexing them isn't particularly easy. They say the females are normally larger than the males and have a different shape to the edge of their shell, but short of seeing the males winkie or them actually getting it on they are difficult to sex.

Hope this helps a bit!

males will mount other males! so a top is always a male but a bottom could be either! i put a dot of nonacetone nail polish on every snail i catch on top so i know who are the males, but i cant tell them all apart. if you can tell who is who you wont need to worry about marking them. the girls will need about 2 inches of space above the water to lay the eggs or they will find a way to get out of the tank to lay and can end up falling on the floor resulting in nasty injuries.

I put 6 of these in what I hope will be breeding tanks on Thursday, will they be safe with any new fry? They are fantastic at cleaning debris out of the tanks.
