Re: My old Reef tank
Are reef tanks a lot of work compared to FW? I adore all the prettyful fish and corals, just always looks like realhigh-maintenance stuff - I'd be scared to go on holiday LOL

Re: My old Reef tank
Yep they are
Once its all up and running its basically the same as FW tanks. Whereas in a FW set-up you check ammonia, nitrIte, nitrAte and ph, in a reef you check all those plus calcium, magnesium, phosphates, salinity, and alkalinity. If any of these rise or fall you have to sort it, or things start suffering especially corals and inverts. Then there's the water......RO water is best, but you either have to buy it or buy an RO unit. Every water change you have to match the salinity etc before adding the water. Water changes are even more important in reefs.
When i did my water changes, say 25%, it would take about 3 hours to run the RO from the RO unit, then a further 20-30 minutes getting the salinity right. Everything is more expensive for salty tanks too:( Test kits for instance. There are loads on the market, but the best ones are about £8 - £13 for a single type of test kit. Times that by 8 and you get the picture.
A well maintained Reef should be ok left for a week, if the lights are on timers and someone can feed maybe mid week.
They are very rewarding if you have the time to put into them.

you could have a fish only type. with or with out live rock then you wouldnt have to have ro water. and you would have less test kits. plus its way cheaper
