What should I put in a 5 gallon tank?

[left]I am going to buy a new tank and I am not sure what to put in it, I am new at this. What should I use for a base? the tank has heater, filter and light. I just was looking at some pics and do you not use gravel? Help, buying the tank on the 8th! New baby soon after I get everything set up right! confused01

What substrate is entirely up to you and your preference. We have some tanks with coloured or natural gravel and some with sand (children play sand) we also have some bare bottomed.

In a 5 gallon I think some nice gravel and some plants and caves would look really nice. Would you want live plants or silk ones. Plastic are not so good as their sharp edges can rip the Bettas delicate fins.

I use either sand or rounded gravel, so I know that it's not too sharp or anything. Coconut caves and little terracotta pots can be nice, and silk plants are what I use as in the long run I don't have to fork out with replacing them if they go manky Very Happy
