diatoms

does anyone else have a prob with them? i have them big time in the ten gallon and some in the 20. the 20 is cycled and the ten's filter is cloned from the 20. the ten has been running for 2 months and just in the last week and a half started getting the diatoms. the 20 gallon has had them to some degree for months though not nearly as bad.i wipe them off. but what can i do to get rid of them? they are ruining my new plants!! will i be able to get them off the plants?

Maybe reduce the lighting and/or change the light bulb/tube. I find that tanks with reduced filter flow are more prone to diatoms too. I believe if the nitrAtes are kept low there is less chance of a problem.

ok. ill try less lighting, the nitrates are around 10ppm, is that too high for the diatoms? the wierd thing is that the side of the tank with the filter is the worst side confused

they are really annoying the heck out of me!! tantrum

10ppm is fine for nitrAtes. I've been trying to do some research but not found anything of interest yet.

Haha I didn't know what this was until I just looked it up. I think I have some of this in my goldie tank - probs because as you say, the nitrates are higher in that tank (my little pooing monsters lol)

i tried to find some things out too but most of it is for reef tanks. i did find that the light thing probly wont work. i read on a few spots that bright lighting may help get rid of it and oto's. my apples will eat at it but they dont get it all, just ends up having neat patterns in it where they ate! i read they feed on silicates too.
