I am going to use sand in Hellboy's new tank. How often do I change out the sand? confused01

With sand it's easy to see the dirt so you can suction up carefully using an airline. Just give the sand a gentle stir every week or two as well and it will be fine.

I just want to hijack this thread so that I can get a question answered. Since I've been on this forum I've seen a few tank set ups & they all look great. I normally use gravel but I've been thinking about moving to sand in the 6g. It just seems to look better. *shrugs*

1. Is sand ok for bettas?
2. I use an electric gravel cleaner. Would it suck up the sand?

1)yh sand is fine for bettas. if your going to change a tank to sand do it on the 9g the corys will love the sand to sift through thats what i use in all my tanks.
2) and electric one might your best to use a air line tube thats perfect for sucking up uneaten food and not sucking up sand .

IMO as much as I love the tanks with sand in that I have, they always look dirtier because you can see all the poop lol. I get really finnicky and irritated when I can't get it 100% perfect.

I think the electric gravel cleaner might suck up the sand

Some people use Turkey basters too to suck up the bits of poop. Just make sure you don't leave it around and use it for your own cooking sick

you can get a turkey baster from grocery stores here, not sure about where you are bit i would think you still could. they tend to keep them where the measureing cups and spoons are! they work really well to, i use mine for getting fry out of the water change bucket!

Check the baking isle too, that's the isle our stores use. Or a specialty kitchen and bath store might carry them. Very Happy

I think I'll just stick with gravel then. I love my electric gravel cleaner because like silverrabbit, I like things to look just right & the sand/poop thing would irritate me no end. Smile

That is what I decided too Irish! I just am not all that sure how to properly clean the sand, maybe when we get set up in NC and I have more room to work with. Very Happy What type is your gravel cleaner? I have been thinking about doing that and I am looking at things to help me adjust the flow out from my filter, it is not really strong, but I notice the bubbles they are making are being blown around and I want them to be happy. flower

sand really isnt that hard to clean just use a small air line tube to uch out any mess.
what gravel do you use irish lass? if its sharp then it could damage the corys barbles thats why sands better but smooth gravel works aswell. how do the corys barbles look?

Sheena, this is the gravel cleaner I use. Its like a hoover, absolutely fantastic. If you only have a small tank thought it might be too big. I don't know.
