new tank!

Post by flip on Sat Mar 27, 2010 2:49 am

well apparently it is just meant to be for me to have more big tanks lol! i have been given for free a 70 gallon tank. i about died! its just the tank and a light and something else my mom wasnt very good at describing it on the phone. but i can get and make the rest for it! im going to have to find room for it in the basement with the 55. i cant wait to go pick it up!! perfect timing too as my dark purple snail just laid a clutch! i had been waiting to catch her so i could let one hatch and i finally caught her in the act! this new tank will be another snail grow out tank untill i get a stand and lid and everything made for it!!

cool. your having a 70g just for snails. theres no way i would be able to do that i would want to throw in some cichlids and catfish lol. you could make a little sump for it because snails are quite messy.

thanks guys , as soon as i get it home ill get a pic up! once its here im going to get to work on the lid and stand!!!

lol kizno, im not going to keep it just for snails! but untill i get the others sold and the stuff made for it im going to use it for a grow out. hehe thats what the 55 is too at the moment, my grow out. that one will stay for the snails and fry though now that i have the 70!! how would i make a sump? been looking a bit at filters but they are so expensive so if i can make one cheaper im all for it!

i would want fish in the 55g aswell lol.
have you thought about making one of them into a paludarium. have the snails in the water and some newts or frogs would loook cool. or in the 75g you could have a turtle. well for filtering the tank you would wnt about a 10x turn over so would be looking for a filter that will do about 3000lph and would be looking at well over £100. to make a sump your going to want a tank about 20g to use as the sump. ill do a little drawing on paint now to show you how it will work that will be the easiest way.

the tank is a tall too, not a long so im thinking that may have to be a factor? the dimensions are 36x18x25 inches

theres loads of cichlids that can go in there. what would you prefer smaler to mediam fish that you could have a few of like anglefish, apisto, rams, keyholes or you can go for beasts like oscars. sevs, firemouths and fish like that.

its not very good but should give you a rought idear. the filter media should be held in place by a sheet of perxpex or glass with holes in it. the pump will need to be strong enogh to pump the water up tjhat hight an give a 10x turnover. so will need to do about 3000lph. you need to have the outlet pipe from the tank up high enough so that if the pump cuts out the sump wont overflow before the tank is drained down to the pipe but have it low enough that the pump wont overflood the tank because its pumping more water into the tank than is going into the sump. van might be able to help you out a little more there. i get the rough idear but im not to sure on all the technical bits lol.

you will have to put holes at the top of the tank where the pipes are. yh the filter will go in the sump.if you go for a oscar you could have that and a common pleco. or you could go for medium cichlids like firemouths and blue acara. you could have
2 pairs of cichlids like blue acaras, firemoths, convicts
a common plec or a few smaller plecs
12 rainbowfish
