Sororities

Is 6 the magic number to make a sorority work? I have three girls atm, and I had to separate Angeline as her and Lucy Lu are squabbling still, just wondering if when the store gets more girls in will that work better? Shocked

Or should I just keep Angeline separate? Maddona and Lucy Lu seem to do okay together, they were tank mates from the store. I wanted to get more, but the lfs only had two, not sure when they will be getting more in, maybe Wed. or Thurs. Just wondering if I should leave them as is, or try more girls and see if Angeline fits in better then. Question

I would try more. My sister had 3 girls in her tank it just wasn't working. We put two of mine in her tank (as all mine are in sep. tanks and not in a sorority just yet) and it worked well. She now has 8 girls in her tank and only one little but out of a tail.

She also had one that wanted to be the boss but after adding more it is the one with the bit out of its tail.

There is no "magic" number. Whether you have 2 or 22 female bettas, there is likely to be some squabbling going on. Its just that with a higher number of them, hopefully there wont be just one that gets picked on. The best way to reduce these problems is to have a spacious tank and have loads of plants and hidey holes.

Adding to this though I think we've said before that 5+ generally reduces squabbling but as van says there is no number that eradicates the squabbles Smile

I'm in low numbers atm with my sorority and i'm having so much trouble that i've had to split off each female into a part of the tank with that craft mesh stuff until I get some more girls. When I had 7 girls I think it was, there was some arguing going on but no one had torn fins and missing scales like i've had recently.

i had 9 females and had nothink but trouble so sold them they would just constantly fight. i guess it just dependce on the females you get aswell as numbers.

Thanks everyone, as I said, the lfs is out of females atm., I have Angeline on one side separated and Lucy Lu and Maddona are ok, did fine overnight and all day yesterday. I will get more when they come in! thumbup

They get new girls in 2 weeks and he knows I will be getting at least 3! Very Happy

Got some girl guppies today, so now we have 4 girls 2 boys! They all lokk preggo though! affraid

Probably just donate a lot of them back to the store. lolol

Rather than making a new thread:

I was in my lfs' and asking about sororities. Both said that they rarely order girls in cause 3 out of 5 batches die within a few days Sad

I'd like to get about 8 or so girls and wondering if this problem is normal or down to a bad breeder?

My lfs had Angeline and Maddona, and now Johnny Depp(LucyLu) for at least two weeks before I bought them, all the girls I bought yesterday look nice and healthy too. So breeding maybe? Question

Hopefully! I'm looking to see if I can order a really nice male from somebody off here, as there is little choice at my lfs' despite them knowing a lot about them and having great advice, I just think the breeder isn't upto much, maybe wrong temps that are causing the early deaths? Sad

I'm hoping to start breeding by next year and want to be able to produce some healthy fry (of course!) and so looking for healthy B.Splendens.
