Puffer Experimentation
Ive been naughty (what is new). As you guys know Im a bit obsessive when it comes to fish (cories, bettas, puffers
) well puffers was what got me into fishkeeping in the first place and my first ever fish were dwarf puffers, here is Piggy one of my first group:

With any puffs you should really keep species only due to their differentiating tempermants, though there are exceptions.
On the other thread I have irrubesco puffs which are getting along fab and just waiting for females to be found, I may also introduce the neurotic bumblebees of the puff world known as South American puffers.
Anyways now for the experiment. I have a 18"x18" cube tank and with lampeyes, rabsoras and cories, have decided to introduce 3 pygmy puffers (otherwise known as pea puffs). It is an experiment as these guys have been known to work in community tanks or act as buzz saws. Why have I done it? Partly curiosity, as I have known their natures before. Partly because the Pets at Home had a surprise delivery of them on the day I happened to be there a month ago and they didnt know what to do with them, I spent a good half hour helping set up and giving requirements for what they should be fed and shouldnt go with (the store typed up a label especially!), also gave my mobby number incase of emergency, never called but the lady who knows me now has it! Anyways they had been there a month, apparently one guy had tried some even though advised against and he returned them as he didnt know how to look after them. Some had died off because the lady who is great with the fish explained her co-workers would try to feed them flake no matter how hard she tried, only the remaining 12 had survived and she kept plumping them up.
I couldnt help it honest but the smallest 3 have made their way home with me to the community tank of small fish, tbh at this stage they are bullied by everything else including the cories. I do expect this to change, though they have been in their a week and already established their own terrortories. So give me a couple of months and will let you know the progress of them, my hopes are that as they are extremely young they will grow with particular habits. My original 4 were pretty much full grown and within a day had established their side of the tank and eaten everything, these havent even touched the pest snails (typical...)
Anyways sorry to blab on as always, here is a pic of the smallest, he prob looks big in the pic but he actually can only just eat one small bloodworm to get a full belly

Re: Puffer Experimentation
hope it all works out well. ive always wanted dwarf puffers but never really had the room because like you say they will either work or go crazy and attack the other fish and i never really wanted to risk it. hope it works well :]

Re: Puffer Experimentation
Well there are back ups and a swift net if I do find it goes wrong, it is early days yet though do know these little guys have worked and faired well in someone elses tank as a "comunity" wouldnt recommend to anyone else unless they have thought the consequences through and can act fairly quick. Will try to get more pics as these guys are fascinating and starting to come out more and recognise me as feeder
