What would you do with a 100L tank?
Page 1 of 1 • Share •
What would you do with a 100L tank?
I'm looking to buy a 100L tank (£55 from my local aquarists Frisby's)
I want to have a sorority, and I'm thinking of possible other community fish, maybe guppies?
1.What wattage heater should I get?
2.What filter would you recommend?
3.What fishies?
4.Should I divide around 30L for a sorority?
5.How many girls would you recommend for a group?
6. I'm looking to breed, so would you recommend a section of the tank divided for fry?
7. When breeding do I add the female to the male?
8. I have a 17L tank going through a fishless cycle, expected (from what I have been told by a number of people) that it should last around 3 weeks. Should I expect it to last around 8 weeks for a tank this size?
Thank you so much in advance for your help

1.What wattage heater should I get? 100w
2.What filter would you recommend? Fluval u2
3.What fishies? Peaceful shoaling fish like Rasboras, Cories
4.Should I divide around 30L for a sorority? Personally I wouldn't. More space for the females is better
5.How many girls would you recommend for a group? Minimum 5 or 6
6. I'm looking to breed, so would you recommend a section of the tank divided for fry? Totally different tank needed
7. When breeding do I add the female to the male? In a seperate breeding tank yes
8. I have a 17L tank going through a fishless cycle, expected (from what I have been told by a number of people) that it should last around 3 weeks. Should I expect it to last around 8 weeks for a tank this size? Not neccessarily, every tank is different though.

Re: What would you do with a 100L tank?
i agree totally with all vans replies,
If you aim to breed you want a tank dedicated to the fry/spawning process
and girls you might as well mix with some community fish and don't bother with partitions
male will need his own tank or a good partition if you hope to house him in that tank... if partitioning you want a high edge above the water line as they jump well!

My soon to be boy (after the cycle is done) will be going in a 17L (3.7G) tank on his own with a few plants
I have plans for a 100L and now pricing up the extra costs of breeding

i would majke sure the 100l is heavly planted i had 9 females in a 30G and they did nothink but fight i had to sell them in the endbecause they where shredding each other no matter what i tryed they would just fight. im not trying to put you off but just warning you evan with larger numbers of females it doesnt always work out well.

That's ok, seems I may have to put on hold plans of a 100L for a few months as may have to take in a checkered garter snake!

This is my 100litre tank, totally devoted to a female sorority. Currently have 9 females in it.
They get on fine!

Re: What would you do with a 100L tank?
Terracotta pots can be picked up at local garden centres for about 47p!!! (Bargin!!
)
Few plants from MH aquatics, bog wood i picked up somewhere for cheap. I basically just keep adding bits. One of my bunched plants i keep in the boys tank, came apart earlier, so i've just layed it across the rest of the girls tanks surface, so its a PROPER JUNGLE in there now!!!!!
The filter in this tank is a 'aquamanta', think thats what its called, got it from maidenhead aquatics, about £80! the water is CRYSTAL clear constant & my water stats are the tops, cycled & everything, this thing deffo has helped alot.

it is great, but i find the bigger the tank, the more of a nightmare it is to clean, im reeeally OCD with my fish though, if i see one poo on the gravel, i have to get it out!
...i'd polish the plants if i could

Re: What would you do with a 100L tank?
haha you'd hate my 100gal cichlid tank, they poo for the whole world, nevermind for england
and cos it's sand substrate you see it all the time. Drives me nutso because you can never get it all out as by the time you're refilling after a water change, they've pooped all over the place again.

Re: What would you do with a 100L tank?
Haha yeah it's a total nightmare and does my head in all the time. I don't feed them much at all now because it's just ridiculous, so they only get food maybe 3 times a week. They still manage to poo all day long, not sure where they make it all from
Had to have sand with my blue botia's and botia kubotai's and the harlequin shark, as they all love to snuffle around.
Haha I don't have much room left, that's for sure
Wow, can you imagine having 500 male bettas?! i'd be in heaven!

Re: What would you do with a 100L tank?
Your tank looks really good damo!
I'm excited about getting my community tank :D (once I have my darn ph problem sorted out). Tempted to spend £200 of my student loan (I will be doing Zoology with a focus on tropical fish :P) on a tank that is in my lfs, huge corner tank with a cabinet, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] similar in size and style to this (worked the dimensions out to 700L is that right?
), which comes with filters and lights etc. :D Worth the money for sure! Second hand, hence low price (Got my 45ltr for £5).
Going to be moving from sand to gravel in my betta tank too.
Is there any very small lighting out there that doesn't need a lighting kit with it, i.e. plug in the light and go (like heaters)
