:D yeh, i think the guys ideas are based towards selling more as he said that he has had a male and a female pair in a 20Ltr tank just fine. Hmm, oh well, tank nitrites levels are high, so seems it's going well, and will be getting a male in a month so :D

Guess it's common practice for some shop owners to try to get more fish in your tank sine that's more sales for them. And they hope as you slowly lose fish you come in and buy more.

Platies need to be kept at least 2 females to 1 male other wise the female will be constantly hassled. They also need much more room that 17l, that advice he gave was awful No

I wouldn't say that completely. I'd say I'm a good LFS worker and have helped quite a few people with stocking ect! But do take everything with a pinch of salt though, the shop (well, any good ones) don't have strict 'you've got to say this' rules and the advice given is from the person, not the store. Very Happy

One bloke came in before and wouldn't have it that his Angelfish could potentially eat his Dwarf puffers in the future, or the DPs hurt them. Let alone them having completely different WC needs! Apparently a forum recommends this stocking Shocked

Overall, the advice i've been given in the past is just ridiculous (example - "oh the palembang puffer? you can have him in a community but no long finned fish" or "yes, aquarium salt is fine for making up brackish water" or "bettas don't need frequent water changes in small bowls because they have labrinth organs") hence my point of view, but I accept that not literally all LFS staff talk out of their behinds I have one excellent LFS but the rest are just terrible for advice. Maybe i'm just surrounded by idiots here in london lol

Jake15 - I think when it comes to LFS employees its sometimes better to err on the side of caution. You can either research & research before you buy so that you're making your own informed decisions or take the advice you're given by the LFS employee with a pinch of salt and "risk it".
I'm sure you're a great employee but you're not in the majority. Smile I've had to shop around & shop around until I found 1 lassie (in a huge LPS!) that knows her stuff. If she's not in I don't bother asking anyone else anymore.

Of course! Just generally not listening to a potentionaly great lfs employee could cost fish lives ect. Although I recommend that buyers do prior research or we both can on the store computer!

I really thought when I joined there that I new most about almost all of the fish they'd sell! I'm so wrong :| The shop stocks eels, marines, cichlids that names make my head go 'biiiiing'!

I take what the lfs tell me and do the opposite. Just kidding. Out of all the
clerks I have found only a couple I will trust. My advice is to run your questions
through here as you'll receive friendly and sound advice.

Like the old saying, " The only stupid question is the one thats not asked"!
