Sand versus electric gravel cleaner?

Sand versus electric gravel cleaner?
Ok, so I bought an electric gravel cleaner a few months back. It was a tad' expensive but God does it ever do the job! :D
I have been tossing around the idea of changing over to sand. It just looks so much better IMO. I'm thinking that the gravel cleaner would probably suck up and remove the sand, right?

Cheers Damo. I thought using white gravel would be a similar look to sand. It just isn't though. I'm not at all content with it.

Re: Sand versus electric gravel cleaner?
I changed from gravel to sand thinking it would be loads better BUT cleaning it is a pain in the butt!! So now iv decided to change back to gravel but black gravel. When i used white gravel before it just showed up the dirt!
I just dont know how im going to get every bit of sand out...a messy job i think!
I only used sand as a trail as i got half a bag free when i bought my big tank off ebay.

I think you'll end up with a lot of sand getting sucked up, but you could always just rinse, scoop it out and put it back in the tank.
My sand depresses me, always looks dirty with poop sitting on it. I much prefer my gravel tanks!

I guessed those would be the problems with sand. It does look pretty, but I can't imagine trying to clean the stuff!

hmmm im in the procces of switching to sand. one tank left! i hate gravel! i tried one tank sand to see if i would like it and i prefer the fact that everything lays on top. and the extra bit of water inbetween WC's are probably good for them
hehe im very particular about the floor being clean though! i really dont like there to be a way for crap to hide!

Re: Sand versus electric gravel cleaner?
ive got sand in all my tanks and would never go back to gravel. its really not that hard to clean just takes a little longer. what i do is gett all the poo and bits out with a bit of air line and then use a normal syphone to take the more water out. if you use the air line to clean it and then use the electric gravel cleaner a few inches above the sand it should be fine.

Re: Sand versus electric gravel cleaner?
I think I will probably just stick with gravel. I served my time with air lines and couldn't stand them.

Im going to have to try it as my small tank isnt being cleaned up by the cae's where as in the larger tank they would clean it inch by inch!!

Re: Sand versus electric gravel cleaner?
i use one of them algea scrape and strap the air line to it useing fishing line so then you can move the sand around while your doing it and you dont have to stick your hand in the tank :]
