Molly died!

Post by Nataliey on Wed Apr 21, 2010 10:13 pm

One of my daughters female mollies died this evening, there was no signs of illness and all the other mollies in the tank where ok in their group. My daughter is distraught and burst into tears crying
Dont understand why she died though scratch Told my daughter she can get another female at the weekend it kinda cheered her up but not a lot.

Sometimes things like that happen. Just a week ago, Zeva one of my female guppies just up and died. I now have replaced her with 'Not George' (Thanks to the honey) but still have no clue why she died other then she was from the lfs scratch Question Good luck on the next girl. RIP Molly. hug

Livebearers are prone to just suddenly going without warning. Think it's to do with the fact that they have interbred so much that they are weaker now. Sometimes livebearers do a bit better with a touch of salt in their tanks (more the lyretail ones that are brackish), but I don't do brackish so can't really offer advice there.

not always because some of the strongest ones are interbreed to create new strains that can be alot stronger and healthier.

I had 6 females and 2 adult males and 1 very young male. They always got on great, always swim round in the group very careing of one another as i could always see...never any nipping by either male or female. Thats why i was shocked when i saw her floating on top.
Dont see what it couldve been.

Well around here I don't know anyone who have had livebearers last very long. There maybe some lines bred a certain way for certain traits via inbreeding, but IMO it just makes them manky lol!

Cant believe it another molly was found dead this morning at the bottom of the tank looks like he might have died during the night. I had noticed though that quite a few times the male orange molly had been chasing him and flaring his fin on his back at him. I think it must be that the orange molly is very dominant as he keeps the girls together near him.
Although saying that, the reproduction in the tank may slow down a bit now (i know thats mean but its true!)

Just to update, since the problems in my big tank that i shut down for the moment and the 5 mollies that had survived, well sadly they have all died now. This morning the adult dalmation had died and the 2 babies kinda killed themselves last night! The babies had managed to sit on top of the filter out of the water and died! Sad So this tank will be on shut down too until i get back off my holidays.

Going to totally gut both tanks and start from stratch!

I dont know, i discovered the 2 there when it was too late. There was no way they could have swam up there as the filter top was slightly out the water. Wouldve thought myself that they could've wriggled off but didnt. Im clueless!
