Strength of Breeds?

Post by 2tall on Tue Jun 15, 2010 6:42 am

Is there a noticeable difference between one breed to another that appears to be heartier than the others. I'm leaning towards either a crowntail, halfmoon or, a doubletail. This could certainly have an influence on my decision. Thanks!

halfmoons are not as hardy as the others. Veiltails can take the most IMO

I adore HM's but when they get ill I can never seem to get them right, and incognito has said the same to me.

I think CT's would be the hardiest out of your list. I have a CT female hanging in with worms that are making her extremely poorly but she is still fighting

I"ve had VTs, CTs and SDs and HMs now. In my experience VTs will take the most...mistakes. CTs will reflect poor water quality but can be brought back from minor things. So far, I haven't had trouble with my HMs *knock wood* But they do seem more delicate than the VTs and CTs that I have had. I would go with a CT. If you pick well, they have a full spread and look showy even without flaring.

In my experience the hardiest types are vt, pk and hmpk. ct's are fairly hardy, however can have problems with their fins, they are more sensitive to water quaility and the amount of light they get. The hardest i've found to keep is definately hm's, their tails are quite delicate and they seem to be more prone to illness. dt's are no more difficult than the tail type they are ie. dtpk or dtct or dthm

I thank you for your reply. Since I'm not very experienced yet I probably will go
with the c/t. I saw yesterday. I felt a strong urge to impulse buy on the spot so I high tailed it out!

I only get one choice as I have just one 10gl. right now. Complete 5gl. hex in a day or so for $10(My bare minimum for a male). I'm going to two more stores
before I return for the ct I like. I'm a little off so I have to validate my choice so
I don't second guess myself! Well, off I go on my mini quest!

I have a double tail and no one has really commented about them, how does he compare to the others?

Being new I prefer not to post answers. They have two distinctive caudal fins.
I don't know if theres more to the story. Take my answer as very limited. I try to remember in the UK they are 8 hrs, ahead of us. Maybe thats why you haven't received response as of yet.

I only have one DT and she's fairly new. I'm guessing that the difficulty level for keeping them would be similar to that of the HMs as they are prone to swim bladder issues because they often have shortened bodies.

I'm not sure about DT's in general, but I had 1 very pretty boy and he seemed weaker than my others, and perished very quickly Sad

I know people say CT's are not so hardy, but i've found them easier than other types. I think t really depends on where you get your fish from - my best fish are UK bred. My feathertail has been to hell and back with internal parasites or bacteria from goodness knows where and he's still as tough as a rock, yet he's an extreme HM and so is more "sensitive".

VT's i've found to be quite weak, maybe it's just the stock around me

I could see that happening. VT most likely have a larger gene pool so they higher chance of survival (genetic factor) but, since they are so common and don't fetch as high a dollar, in large scale commercial breeding they're probably not treated as well (environmental factor)

my opinion...

in order

vt's are hardiest because of their random mix of gene pool (lfs stock)

plakats are strongest genetically for the line bred show types

deltas/halfsuns/mucky ctpks(1st-2nd gen) are next strongest (same, in theory depending on if mass bred or someone trying to create a line)

hmpk line bred symmetrical pks have enough of the wild hardy genes in background to make them pretty good for general hardiness.

ct's..
lfs ones are in general hardy but...
get curling and bent fins in genetics when line bred but often crossed out, rarer colours you will get the finnage but often the colour lacks or they are a bit more fragile.

delta/sd same thing usually outcrossing so hardy on average and less finnage to spoil.

giants I'd put in the same level of hard to maintain as delta and superdelta as they have so much plakat still in recent genetic pools they're hardy but quick to have digestive problems due to size and appetite. (Also a nightmare to spawn as they are so different by nature.)

hm and double ray ct show quality then very delicate (think thoroughbreds of bettas)

Over halfmoon (ohm), Feather tail (ft) and Rose tail (rt) very fragile fins as they're well up the breeding lines to increase the finnage. They can get too excessive to the point the fish can't swim properly and fins easily damaged.

Doubletails, I'm not sure where i would put them lol

do a double tail to another and most fry will be deformed
put doubletail tail to a non-double (single tail ct/hm/vt etc.) you will get some doubles and some single finned fry

the single tailed will have stronger tidier finnage and doubles will be just as solid except double tail again.

double tail is a mutant gene.. used in spawning it strengthens the fin rays and broadens the fins rather than adding length but because it is caused by a mutant gene it does cause deformaties if two are bred together

Otherwise I'd say they are nearer to hmpk hardiness than hm/drct
