This algae drives me nuts!

Post by Nataliey on Sun Jun 27, 2010 8:29 am

I wondered if anyone else gets this in there tank its so annoying as even when iv done a water change and wiped this stuff off, it reappears within a day only on that one side though. I thought maybe the sun caused it to actively grow with the heat of the water but this side of the tank faces away from the window.

Im thinking of doing a 100% water change and using milton baby bleach to clean the tank maybe this might help. I used the milton baby bleach to clean my 100 litre tank before refilling it as this would get slight slimey bits at the back of the tank. Since using the milton there's no sign of the slime.

Here's a picture of the nusiance algae:

Algae can be a right pain. You can try covering the sides and just leave the front open.

What I have found that helps a bit, is lots of floating plant in the tank.

Apart from that it's just a case of cleaning off. We've had tanks stripped and cleaned and within a week it's back again Twisted Evil

I've been getting a bit of it on one side of my 6g. Its the side that the sun shines on (not directly). I've done a massive clean and water change today so I'm going to try covering that side during the day to see if that helps. The stuff drives me mad, its just so grubby looking.

I used to have terrible algae in my community tank. The only thing that worked was stiriping it and washing everything in bleach or white vinegar. It's a little better now that I have algae eaters in there, but I noticed this morning that I have tiny bits of that brown algae growing again.

Because my tanks are divided I can't really add any algae eaters Taelin. There just wouldn't be the room for the wee sods.

Smurf is my only betta that has ever lived with algae eaters and they lived happily together. Now that the tanks are divided there wouldn't be nearly enough room so I guess its just a matter of keeping on top of it all.

I had mentioned to my mam about wanting to divide the tank. Her tank had got low in numbers so she said she'd have them so I could divide the tank straight away. She now has a shoal of about 14 rummy nose tetras. They look so impressive like that! The cory's are all doing well too! Surprisingly well. The wee buggers adapt brilliantly.

sounds good. big shoals of tetra and rasbora look amazing. i saw a pic of a tank that was about 200G and had about 400 tetra in it that looks amazing. I like corys my pandas are great to watch shifting sand around.

I'm desperate for some dwarf puffers now but I refuse to buy another tank. I'll just wait until a freebie comes up or something...

In the dwarf puffer thread? I did see your reply, thanks pet! I just never added to the thread because I'm not getting them right now. If I could happen on another tank I'd move Kaito and Smurf into that. I don't like the hex divided so I'd put the DP's in there.

Yh thatwas the thread. fair enough. shame your not any closer ive just sold a 2.5g,5g and 10g. Is it one of them 5G hex? you could only really get 1 in there if you do move the bettas. I want to get a bigger tank 5-6 foot asnd use my 30g for a bigger type of puffer but atm im quite happy with breeding my bns and hopefully some gold marbled bns when i get them so might set up a few breeding tanks for them instead.

nataliey Do you have one of them little algea magnet scrapers? if not it might be worth getting one i use on in my baby bn tank just because they are so messy and it cleans it really well but the only problem is all the algea goes into the water so you have to do a waterchange after

Sorry for the thread hijack Nataliey!! Very Happy

Kiz, my 9g is a hex. The 6g is a rectangle one. I'll never buy a shaped one again....you live and learn!

I used to have a hex and wee have a coldwater biord because my mum likes it. with snails in and tbh i hated them noth rectangle tanks are just alot easier to keep and stock no chance ill ever but another shaped one unless its a bow front or jewel corner tank which look amazing and are big enough that you can still have a good stock.

When I first decided to get a tank I knew it would be for a betta so when I seen a hex set up it looked pretty and I bought one. Now that I've been keeping fish for a while I know that I prefer the rectangles but I won't get rid of the hex because its decent.
