Yh i know what you mean i was the same my first tank was a biorb then a hex and now i just use normal rectangle tanks alot easier to stock. I you like bettas have you ever though about getting a 20-30g tank and dividing it? that would probably save a bit of money on filtering and heater and then you would have room for puffers lol

I got my 30G for £70 with light, external filter, stand, heater and a load of other bits. if your just looking for a tank i managed to get a 21g for £20 that was for a tank, filter, light, heater and a few ornaments.

I need to start trawling eBay then. My friend has a tank that her dad bought her when she moved into her new place. She doesn't really want it now but I don't want to pressure her into giving it away so I'm just biding my time! I don't know what size it is at all.

I would aim to give them 5G each because the tank will be taller than a 5g just to give them a bit more swimming space that isnt straight up if you get what i mean. If you get a 30G you could have your 4 bettas in 5G each and then 2 or 3 puffer if well planted in the middle with 10g of water i think that would look good.

You just have to find a 30g now. it would proberly be best to look for external filter aswell so you could have the intake at one end and the output at the other end to get the best circulation. Because it will only be lightly stocked a flurval 305 or tetra ex 600 will work fine.
