Temporary housing for bettas?

Post by jessie1602 on Thu Jul 01, 2010 1:45 pm

Hi guys.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a shop that sells cheap plastic containers that I could use as a temporary home for bettas? I'm thinking plastic hex tanks or those plastic small vivarium thingies. I have bought 4 beautiful new bettas from a brilliant lfs that's near me, and they over-ordered their bettas and have 80+ they need to shift ASAP. I reserved my 4 today but I have to go and pick them up on Saturday. I'm working towards a divided tank to keep them all in, but for about a week I'll need to keep them in small containers and do regular water changes. Luckily my house is super warm and none of my tanks need heaters right now as they stay at a regular 27degrees due to the weather.

If anyone knows a shop I can pick some up cheaply, that'd be great. I don't want anyone to think I'm being mean, it's VERY temporary and I'll make sure each betta gets regular water changes and a nice cave etc :-)

Jess ^^

Critter keepers make good temporary tanks and you can pick up decent sized ones from £7 upwards.

the 99p shops or pound shops have plastic boxes. Almost transparent, you can get really nice big ones. i have about 4 I use in emergency Hubby drills holes in the lid! You can then stack them on top of tanks that have heaters and it keeps the little things nice and snug.

That's a pretty good idea actually. Good to keep in mind in case of an emergency.

For temp homes you can get "goldfish" bowls in 99p shops. I'd just cover them with clingfilm with holes poked in for air. They hold 3 litres.

Also wilkinsons do critter-keeper style 10litre tanks for £5

Thanks for all your suggestions you guys :-)

I was lucky enough to visit an LFS who had some critter keeper type plastic tanks that had dividers inside them! They come in loads of shapes and sizes so I got a 10 litre ones with a divider inside. It'll be handy for QT's and suprise fish in the future too :-D I'm SO excited about bringing home my four new boys tomorrow, it's like Christmas/Betta Eve!

PS. That iPod tank is horrible, nearly as bad as the handbag with a water pouch in it to keep bettas in!

Also in the 99p shops they have, in the cookery section, mesh baking trays to cook chips on! You can cut them down and put on top of betta tanks to stop them jumping!

Duno theres ones where you can keep fish in the heels of your shoe aswell. that i pod one is the worst ive ever seen. its about 1/2l the betta can barely turn round and theres no room at all for a filter or heater.

these are pretty bad aswell

That last one does look really good but like someone said theres no way for them to get oxygen at the bottom of the tank. I still think a big eels would look cool in that tank to watch it go through the tubes.

Shocked affraid that last link is just the worst, but that light bulb one, is it the actual size of a light bulb Shocked

The big one in the middle of the hall how on earth you supposed to do a water change in that...or even feed them at that.

These people who design these tank for the fact they think they are a fashion item or they look cool, but actually they are making cruel things. Evil or Very Mad

I think its the same size as a light bulb. Looks it to me.
I dont have a clue plus it has to be the most over stocked tank ive ever seen.

some people just dont care and think they look good. A goldfish costs what 99p some people just dont care about paying for a new one once one dies every few weeks. same as a betta because people think they look nice and like small places people just cram them into small places that look god.
