Fair enough. Hope you get this one :]
Or the other longer way you could cycle it is but adding the new filter to the old tank running with the old filter for a month and but that time it will have its own bacteria colony and then you can move it to the new tank. Or you could just put the sponge from the new filter into the old filter with the old sponge aswell and run them both on the old tank for a month and then do the same as the other way. Bit hard to explain.

What about splitting them both in half and inserting the cycled ones underneath
the newer ones? If I have a bona fide test kit I could monitor daily as needed.

I'd also take 30-50% water from the established tank to add to the new one.
Catfish are fairly hardier and could be added rather soon couldn't they?

Really dependence what type? some are some arnt. Once the media is added you should add the fish within the same day really or the bacteria will die off

How many pygmy corys should I add to each side if I split one 10gl. for Bettas?
Might try adfs and/or cherry shrimp on one side.

6 in a 5G section will work. The a bettas and one ADF on the other side then a few shrimp on each side sounds fine to me thumbup

Something along those lines have been in mind for awhile. Still 2 little neons I'll put opposite of the frog.I've been waiting on a test kit before I split because I didn't want to loose two at once.

What would you keep in a 2.5gl hex with an under gravel system To keep bacteria going? I'm thinking of it for transitional housing for new fish to check them out for problems before introducing to main tanks.

When the filters not running on the 2.5G you could out it in the 10G and then move it back when needed. Because if you keep something in the tank when you add a new fish in such a small place it will be hard to keep good water quality which is what you need if the fish are ill.

I'm not intentionally bringing sick fish home but might want look for say ick or
finrot showing up in a day or two. Or in case I just miss something at the store.

I have a little Betta tank 1gl. for an ICU!

A 2.5 will be alot better for a hospital tank because it will be alot easier to keep clean and at a stable temp.

I don't know what the dwarf pike look like. The snakeheads are cool. Go for the hardest to acquire or the best deal. Do you have a place for them?
