Re: Aloha :)
O and i would use sand or black sand for substrate corys like to shift through it and some types of gravel can damage there barbles. You can just use normal kids play sand aslong as you was it first and its alot cheaper than aquarium sand from the lfs.

Ohh, ok, the gravel I'm using right now is actually the smallest Pettex Dorset pea gravel as I was reading up on lots of forums about how it's smoother than other gravel and would be safe on catfish barbels, but easier to clean than sand. The pictures might make it look bigger than what it is since Dorian is really quite smaller than he looks.
Think it's ok?

Did you see my post on the other page aswel? i remembered i wanted to add that but for some reason it wont let me edit. That gravel sounds fine then aslong as its smooth there shouldnt be a problem.

Re: Aloha :)
Haha, ok, one more question! Last one, I promise!
I don't know if you know enough about Betta's to answer this (if not, maybe someone else who reads this can), buuut, I've purchased some freeze dried bloodworm and decapsulated brine shrimp eggs for Dorian. I know they're only meant to be "treats" and given 2-3 times a week. I've also read that the bloodworm packs the protein but can make your Betta constipated, and the brine shrimp act as a laxative. How often should I feed him of each? Do I feed bloodworm and brine shrimp together? Or something like bloodworm twice a week and brine shrimp once?
Thanks!

I would only feed live or frozen twice a week. If they do get constipated you can feed them deshelled boiled peas to help.
I would go for something like this
Monday - brineshrimp
Tuesday - pellets
Wednesday - pellets
Thursday - bloodworm
Friday - peas
Saturday - pellets.
Sunday - pellets

I was so happy when I stumbled across her fish, I've been looking so long for one that really really appealed to me. It seems quite difficult to locate Betta breeders in the UK. If I had the equipment I would definitely consider going ahead and giving it a go.![]()
I totally adore the fish in your avatar :D

Ohh, ok!
I just bought 2 female crowntail sisters from him on eBay. They're missing their ventrals, but gorgeous girlies nonetheless, so I decided to get a small tank set up in my brother's room and I'm going to surprise him when they arrive on Wednesday.

The description says: Nice bright colours and healthy. Please be aware that these 2 females are ventraless, This is a pair of fins that should be present just under their chin area. A common cause of no ventrals is from ammonia burning from the base of the raising tank when they were tiny fry. The ventrals will never grow back. Selling as a pair because they have lived with eachother since hatching.
I'm not really sure what it means by ammonia burning?

Oh Welcome! I have just seen this thread, fantastic photo's of him he looks really well! I'm so happy to see one of my babies being so adored! He was one of the best pineapple boys I had I only had about 3 out of the spawn so he is def unique!
Ammonia burning is the build up of ammonia which largely created from waste it settles at the bottom of the tank and if the fry sit at the bottom their Ventral fins can be burnt off

Thanks Tilly
The ammonia thing sounds quite horrible
Is it one of those things that just happens sometimes?
I was a bit concerned about his fin today - I posted on the other forum with pictures. Looks a little black - I figure this is probably a result of his colour morph? Just wanted to be sure though; I've seen what fin rot can do and I really don't want to take any chances. In some lighting it appears dark dark turquoise.
Anyway, here's a picture I took about an hour ago of the cutie:

Re: Aloha :)
Yeah dont worry the black edging on his ventrals is just his colour
thats typical of pineapple colour morphs! Erm you can avoid the burning with regular water changes but some fry do insist on lying on the bottom of the tank so its also not uncommon

Oh i looked at those 2 females as i was after CT females, i was a little put off at the fact they had missing ventrals! So i bought the copper HMPK in my avatar pic and a multi HMPK both bought from the same buyer. Mine are also arriving on wednesday.

Aww, yeah, I felt bad for them so I couldn't help it. I'm a bit of a sucker like that ): I noticed that his prices had dropped significantly due to pending building work and I wanted to help, and it felt like a decent thing to do to ensure they found a good home. <3 I know they're going to be a really nice surprise for my brother too, seeing as he was excited to check out Dorian when he arrived. He's just turned 13 and a really good kid so I doubt he'll notice, let alone care, that they're missing ventrals :D
