BTW I picked up a large whole raw shrimp in the shell today for cycling
the 5gl.. Just pop it in or should I boil a bit first? What then. Wait a day or so and rob some of the establish filter?

I'm not that concerned with larger fish( except the Redheads maybe) but
more space for more fish all in one tank. Plecos and Redheads in same tank
okay I hope.? Tell me-tell me I gots to know! lol!

I would just add it wait a few days till it start to rot then add some of the established media. Before you add any fish once its cycled make sure you do a 100% WC so theres none of the shrimp left.

Yeah plecs and redheads will be fine aslong as theres enough room. Im keeping BNs and a Royal plec with my Red heads when i get them. I now plan on getting a big group of 8 Red heads.

Thanks! I'll do that with the shrimp. Duh! I can check for the presence of ammonia before the adding the media.

Redheads and Plecos in the same tank would make a 75gl. worth investing in.

Someones considering on selling their Eclispe Canopy and if its around half
price of new I might go for it. Might be B/N time in the 20gl. or corys of a
sort. So much to choose from!

Saw two videos on different spawns of eggs and fry in their caves. Pretty
cool! One batch were longfins. I like both equally I think.

Yeah its best to make sure theres ammonia first of the bacteria will die of straight away.

Yeah. In a 75G you could have 4 Redheads and 4-5 medium plecs like BNs or 1-2 bigger plecs like royals.

That seems like a good deal. 20G would be a good size for a breeding pair or trio of BNs but it could get overrun quite quickly. Corys could work but you will need a hatching tank if you want any fry because they will eat there own eggs.

I used to like longfins but im going off them and back to the more natural looking browns. I might get some fry from parent wild caught from Colombia for £1. I really want some White seam bristlenoses/Ancistrus dolichopterus/L183 but they get alot bigger than normal BNs and are likely to push them around and theres a risk of crossbreeding.

On another forum I've been posting wants people give away BNs as they
are such prolific breeders. I've seen free convicts too.

You have to ask yourself if its worth the risk of crossbreeding. Might be interesting!

I still have 3 10gl. complete tanks sitting around I think. I should set one up
for some Pygmies. Might be fun!

They do breed like crazy so you can normal pic them up for £1-2 from breeders. Convicts breed like crazy and they breed from such a young age and size (1") so its really easy to get over run.

Its not worth the risk IMO. Plus i dont have the room to keep all the hybrids if they do cross so would have to cull them.

Sounds good. You could have 1 for a breeding tank and 1 for a fry tank.

Who knows, I might even be able to breed BNs. What to do with all though?
I better check with a couple of independent lfs's and see if they'll take them
cheap or in trade.

So you have to remove the eggs right away then?

Try selling them cheap to people or see if you can work a deal with a lfs for big lots. IMO its alot easier just to sell big lots to LFS than sell them separately.

With corys yes or them will eat them with the BNs no they will look after the fry.

Yeah I watched the videos of the BNs fanning the eggs in the cave and
then saw the fry bunched up with the parent. Is it the male that does the parenting?

Yeah once the eggs are laid the female will leave them. The male will do all the fanning for 4 day while they hatch and than the male will keep them in the cave for another 4 days while the yolk sacs are eaten. Once they start eating solids he will venture out the cave with them and eat for the first time in 8 days but will still guard them and the cave as much as possible. after another few days he will just leave them to fend for them selfs. You might thin a BN wouldnt do that good a job of protecting the eggs/fry but they really do.

It sounds like some of the parents in the States could learn loads from
BN Parenting 101! lol! You wouldn't think so by the appearance! Looks
are deceiving!
