Paranoid!

Post by Nataliey on Wed Jul 14, 2010 2:20 pm

I think im being paranoid BUT my new copper male looks like he may have a white ovi spot! I know young males can have this as he is only 4.5 months old could this be possible.

Iv been trying to get photos but its hard as he keeps moving about, i tried the mirror test he came to have a look but no flaring, also Haku has noticed the new boys and has been flaring at them but the copper boy hasnt been flaring at him at all.

Am i paranoid...i just cant stop looking!

stop looking.
My latest girl who was really sulky, has a white spot but also flares! I am unsure if her frill is all round her face or not, but at least she has cheered up....perhaps you can find out more in a few days x

Hi Nat, just a quickie, but I've been told by a breeder that the frill around the males gills is always black, no matter what their colouring. Can you see what colour is around his gills? From your avatar it looks black. He said females don't have a black frill near the gills. I'm no expert (on anything) because I don't own any females yet so have never really seen one close up! But this is what he told me ages ago when I first went to see Rocky.

That's not true at all Jessie. The males beard can be other colours too. We have had some in the past with clear beards, red beards and mottled ones.

The thing to look for when they flare is that the males beard will continue all the way around and under the chin. Females when they flare don't have the extra bit under the chin.

Ah right, thanks Netty. Worrying that a breeder told me that wrong info in confidence! @Nat when your copper finally flares I guess you can look under it's chin and see if he has a full on beard Smile

I think it is not uncommon for young boys to have an ovi spot, so it'll prob turn out as the boy you think you bought, lol

I know its not best way to judge but im still not overly sure how to sex a PK betta very hard as im still learning, not as obvisous as say a halfmoon and a crowntail the males with the big tails!!

But iv looked at him again this morning and he's going mad at his reflection, as is Casper who has no ovi spot!! So id say definately a male.
