What could live in here?

Whats with all the 1/2 gallon bowls ( about 1.9 litres I believe) what can you do with them? I've been told you can put a betta in them. But I dont know if thats true though I doubt it since they are so small.

What can I do with the thing? It was given to me by a friend who was moving.

I dont even think a plant would live in there. I had my old Betta Ryu in it for about three months no problems ( he ended up having a huge problem when i moved him into his ten gallon and went to the pet store looking for something to put in there with him and they told me I could put in a female betta )

But he had no problems with weekly water changes and with no heater the water stays around 70. I want to put one in my ten gallon but I have fish in there right now ... that i have to rehome. so would he be ok in it for a few weeks so i wont have to recycle the tank?

If it's not good for him I wont do it. But I have done other research and it says its doable temporarily

He should be ok temporarily yeh. Better if you could keep it warm too.

hmm... I'm sure I could find a way ... my heater broke though... it no longer shuts off ... so i'll need to get a new one before i get the little guy.

That size of tank, temporary works with daily water changes but don't dump it when its served that purpose, it will be a good emergency tank..isolated med treatment or fin nips etc.

thanks thats a great idea I can keep it in storage and if my ADF's and Bettas have a conflict they can be separated.

I use mine for those lucky bamboo plants. Fill it with big aquarium gravel and stick a plant in there :D

I wont have any future fry ..i'm only getting a betta and two ADF's and maybe pygmy corys

I currently have a ten gallon cycling and want to put the betta in the bowl for a while while it cycles. Would he be ok to be in it for a few months with conditioning water staying around 72 and a good diet ( sundried shrimp floating pellets and flakes)

If he would be fine I would love to get one

I didn't cycle any of my tanks before I put fish in. I let them sit for a day and that's it. I did, however, do ~25% water changes every day and carefully monitor the water quality with a test kit. I used the additive biological filters. I use Stress-Zyme. I've used Cycle in the past. I also had Amquel on hand in case ammonia levels got too high, but they didn't. I've had one tank set up for about a month now and the other for about two weeks. I'm now doing the water changes every 2-3 days and last weekend did a bigger 50% water change. In another month I'll drop down to doing a 10-25% water change once a week.

Keep in mind that Amquel merely alters the ammonia into something non-toxic from what I understand, but the ammonia still reads on test kits (They don't differentiate between toxic and non-toxic).

I personally would only keep a betta in a bowl for a few days out of necessity. I would never keep one in a bowl for a few months. It just seems cruel to me. I equate it to being locked in a prison cell. Yes, you can live in one and be fine, but you wouldn't like it that much.

Like pumkin said i wouldnt keep a betta in a bowl for more than a few day to a week at max. If your going to be doing daily waterchanges on the bowl then it would be better off to put the betta in a bigger tank with a filter and do daily waterchanges in the bigger tanks.

What about a one gallon with a filter and heater temporarily? I keep a close eye on water parameters and have all the stuff in case something goes wrong.

And i had a betta in a 1/2 gallon before he did great I upgraded him to my ten gallon eventually my other posts will tell you what happened to him ( that was before I knew better though)

I have my heart set on a little crowntail at the LFS and I got a one gallon to house him for a little while. I havent bought him yet or even set up the tank since My goldfish tank has a little ammonia problem I want to nip in the bud first.

But with proper care and a little heater ... could he stay in the one gallon for a little while? I know its not ideal but I hate seeing him in his little cup

Its by belief that he would be better off in the one gl. rather than the cup. Also I imagine he would much receive better and more hands on care with you!

IMO (limited exp.) go buy the c/t you have your eye on and bring him home with you. If you wait someone else might buy him. Run and good luck!

I think almost anything is better than the cup and water changes whenever they feel like it.

I do every other day water changes he'll be started on melafix as soon as he gets home since those conditions ... He'll need it.

I guess it all just comes down to the care they receive! Thats why I poke around all the old threads occasionally and always seem to pick up a little something!

very true ... some pet stores are very much better than others ... the only reason i am considering getting him at this pet store is i can get 2.99 off ... which is half off ... But if the health doesnt seem good enough i'll get plants or something and get a betta from petsmart.

like. Of course $3.00= a plant! lol!

I'm going to an independent lfs thats a little out of the the way and they charge around $15.00 for theres, but they have the best selection and conditions I've seen so far.

They display them in around a 1/2 gl. long neck glass vessel which you may purchase along with your selection. Of course I'd hope an individual wouldn't permanently house them in it!

Hoping to look at another one since its only a few miles farther.
