Bettas and water movement
Hi, when I got my little male betta, I was told that bettas have got to have very still water in their tank because that's what their natural environment in the wild would be like. I was concerned about this when I started my filter on my Eclipse 3 tank, because it causes some turbulence on the right side of the tank. But the weird thing is, it looks like my betta purposely goes over to the "turbulence" like he likes it. The current blows/lifts him up towards the water surface and then he swims back to the bottom of the tank and gets blown up again like he's surfing or something. He could avoid it by staying more on the other side of the tank but he won't. Is this normal?? Here I thought the current would harm him but he looks like he's having fun!

Re: Bettas and water movement
Its true bettas arent to keen of massive current s but not because what its like in the wild because betta splendens are wild they have been breed for the long fins and aggression. The longfins are the reason they struggle wild bettas and female bettas are fine with the current. One of my old bettas used to love playing in the current i cant see it doing any hard aslong as he isnt getting thrown into things or stuck to the intake or shredding his fins up swimming against it then i cant see it being a worry.

Re: Bettas and water movement
You have to have water movement to get the O2 flowing and to keep the water fresh.
With a filter, if you can turn the outtake valve towards the tank side, it will help with lowering the flow or get a sponge box filter, rather than a normal filter. The longer finned bettas have slight issues, shorter finned not so much. Mind you my VT male likes to 'surf' the filter current
As said above, splendens are hybrid bettas and not wild
