Trouble with ammonia!

Post by silverrabbit on Tue Jul 27, 2010 9:15 pm

UGH. well today my fish were looking really unhappy even thougb they only had a 50% water change 5 days ago. Decided to test water to see as my white CT has red streaking and my "deluxe" import HM's both have clamped fins.

Really shocked to find ammonia at 1.2 in both tanks according to Nutrafin liquid test kit Shocked Suspect

Other tanks are fine. Wondering if the Jungle labs med Fungus clear has wiped my filters because these 2 tanks were both dosed last water change, and all of a sudden I have an ammonia spike.

Nitrite = 0 nitrate = 20ish

Did an 80% water change on both tanks and fish looking happier. Ammonia down to 0.6 so will do another water change before I go to bed.

what else can I do? Do you think it's the filters dying from meds? If so i can steal some media from my large tank. I sorted out some of the plants too, maybe they werent helping as some of the cabomba was going funny

STRESSFUL Sad these tanks have been running for 6-8 months so it shouldn't be happening scratch pullhair

Sounds like its killed it of then. I would do 1 more big 50% WC to make sure all the meds are gone then add some of the filter media from another cycled tank to this tank. I would add some carbon aswell if you have any to take and med still left in out. Apart from that theres not much else you can do.

stupid meds Evil or Very Mad i've got some carbon. got it in a huge sheet so will cut some down and place it over the out-take bit of the filter.

It's so irritating when this happens, you feel like you worked so hard to get cycled media in the first place, and then it goes and dies on you! Hope the fish will be ok. they certainly seem happier, earlier my poor hm-rt boy was hiding under a sunken IAL Sad

I would add the carbon for a hour or 2 before yo put the cycled media in just to be on the safe side.
Hope they pull through thumbup
