Picking up 100L tank today :)

Post by Skunk on Wed Jul 28, 2010 2:11 pm

Hey guys! Sorry I haven't been on for a while, have been busy with exams and visiting friends during summer, etc, though all fishies and axolotls are doing great!

Anyway, I saw a second hand tank in my lfs yesterday with a cabinet, hood, lighting, filter and heater for £130, the assistant said it was around 100L, so may be more or less. So, I'm picking it up today at 4pm.

The first in habitants will be my poor WCMMs that have had a 20L tank for the past few weeks and so are getting moved up into the new one soon enough (when water paramaters are right).

I know that last time when I was looking at getting a 100L tank I was thinking of a sorority, and getting 5/6 girls is a possibility still, with the 20L going back to its original purpose of being a home to a male.

But I was also considering endlers, guppies (long tailed), balloon mollies, and a plec, though I'm thinking that the tank would be too small for a plec (it would be my largest tank for quite a while.)

So, any suggestions? Will be back on later to tell you about what make the equipment and exact dimensions later this evening.

Have a good afternoon!

A bristlenose plec would work i have a breeding trio plus 200 fry in a 30G bu some are only a few days old. You can get quite a few different strains like longfin, shortfin, albino, brown and piebald
I would pick either endlers or guppies if you want mix sexes or they will cross breed I personally would go for endlers
In a 100l i think you could have
2 bristlenose (1male 1 female)
10 corys
10 endlers or guppies. 3 males 7 female or 10 males
10 hatchets
and then a centre piece fish like gourami, apistogramma, ram, keyhole.

:D Sounds great, going to have a look at the different fish and see what I like.

Got the tank home and it's a Juwel Roma, around 100-105L. Going to be using an under gravel filter with the air pump that I already have. The guy also gave me £15 worth of bogwood as I said I was looking into getting some plecs.

I do love the look of endlers, but long tailed guppies are just too beautiful to pass up. The amount of fish sounds great as I've always just had the one species.

Just wondering, are the 5 wcmms going to be ok with those others?

Thanks!

I would try and get a internal or external filter if you can. Undergravel filters are a pain IMO.
Thats not to bad. I just got a load of wood out the forest nd sanded it down for my tanks.
Im not as keen on guppies they look ok put there a pair to stock around because a lot of fish nip them. You might have some problems with the WCMMs nipping the guppies so i would choose one or the other.

If you drop the guppies there are a few different fish you could have.
A trio of apistogramma would work or a pair of keyholes, cheackerboard cichlids, dwarf acara or rams.
something like
2 bristlenose (1male 1 female)
8 corys
8 endlers
8 hatchets
5 WCMM
trio of apisto (1 male 2females) or or a pair of keyholes, cheackerboard cichlids, dwarf acara or rams

Of course, wish list may change after a visit to a few lfs over the next week, but at the moment I'm thinking:

2 bristlenose (m&f)
Endlers
Corys
*My current 5 WCMMs*
Balloon Mollies

Unsure whether these would work, but:
synodontis multipunctata
Blue Rams
Angelfish.

Also, problem with my light in that it won't work, not sure whether it is the bulbs or the unit. Going to double check in a mo.

Sounds good to me. You might want to add something like a apisto or gourami just to keep the numbers of fry down because with 2 different types of livebears you could get overrun unless you go on sex.
synodontis multipunctata-need a ph of about 8 which the bns wont like
Blue Rams-need a high temp of 28-32C which none of the fish will like especially the WCMM
Angelfish-will munch on the wcmm and endlers once fully grown and need a tank 18" min.
sorry to completely ruin them 3 ideas lol

bolivian rams would work but they dont have the colours like blues. If you like the blue colour what about apistogramma baenschi, apistogramma nijsseni or Apistogramma panduro. all 3 are fairly common but nijsseni are the most common.

Well, went round my 5 lfs' today with the begrudged boyfriend, righting down names and prices etc.

Picked myself up a 30" undergravel filter and a 20kg bag of gravel (Do I need to wash all of the gravel?)

I also took the "broken" light unit into the lfs where I got it from and it worked >_>, so suspected a dodgy plug socket on the 4 way extension, but no, lights won't work on any of them, though the sponge filter running about 15L of water atm works in all of them. so not dodgy. Hmm, odd.

Now, an epic list of species, of course I won't have all of these, probably around 4-5 species. This is just what I noted on my trip around the lfs'. Any advice on what will work together, what has great character, or what wouldn't work or is too aggressive, etc, would be very helpful. *Ones that I particularly like are in bold*

TETRA
Congo
Blue
Pristella
Silver Tipped
Lemon - Albino
Neon

PLATY
Superneon Calico
Blue
Panda
Sunset/Sunburst (XL)

MOLLIES
Jumbo Balloon (& Normal available)
Dalmation
Sailfin

Synodontis Greshoffi
Red Tiger Oscar (get to 35cm, unsure whether a pair would be ok as a centre piece) 600L min as adults, maybe not :P
Tiger Barbs
Red Endlers
Harlequin Raspbora
Cherry Barb
Gold Rams (Dwarf Cichlids?)
Pimelodella Pictus
Longfin Rosy Barb
Preacox Rainbow
Knight Gobie
Green Phantom Plec.
Totally adore these, £30-£40 but so gorgeous.

Long list I know!

:D Thanks!

I went and got some plants today from MA, 6 for £9. I got straight vallis, amazon swords and 2 small plants that are quite bushy and have a red vein/stem with green leaves.

I also got 5 more WCMM and they've formed a nice shoal already, they look very happy Smile I used drip climatising, of course, as I've had a problem with ph in the past.

I'm now running two filters, the already established sponge which is picking up the slack as the under gravel becomes matured. Just wondering, I'm guessing that the water level needs to be above the pipe for the under gravel?

Also, I now have my light working! Thank god! Truly makes all the difference.

Will get some photos up tonight Smile

Tiger Barbs (to big and active IMO)
Red Endlers
Harlequin Raspbora
Cherry Barb
Gold Rams (Dwarf Cichlids?) (need high temps of 28-32 which most fish wouldnt like)
Pimelodella Pictus (get 6" and need to be kept in groups which a 100l is to small for)
Longfin Rosy Barb
Preacox Rainbow (get to big and active IMO)
Knight Gobie
Green Phantom Plec. Totally adore these, £30-£40 but so gorgeous. (what type theres 2 one gets 6" which should be ok but one gets 7.5" which is to big IMO

Try and look for 1 or a pair of bigger fish for a centre piece then a shoal of small shoaling fish then some bottom dwellers.
I would go for
pair of apisto (centre piece)
1 BN or other smaller plec
8 corys (any type should work)
8 small tetra, rasbora or other shoaling fish
8 hatchets
something like that looks good but some of the types of fish changed around
