I need a honest opinion here!

Post by ubrosso on Sat Jul 31, 2010 2:34 am

Okay... To make this short:

I have a 3g tank with loads of plants, internal filter, a betta (male) and 2 apple snails, im cycling with them all, my amonia is ZERO already and im on nitrIte peak right now. So far so good as im doing 2x 50% water changes daily and taking tests twice a day. BUT my betta is picking on the antennas of my snails when they are fed algae wafers... What should i do?

a) Keep them both (as he hasnt been succesful at hurting them)
b) Remove 1 snail for the sake of overpopulation and see if betta stops that behavior
c) Remove both snails

I dont want a betta only tank... If i were to remove them what else could be put with the betta? I've heard of the red ramshorns but wouldnt the betta kill them as they are smaller than the apple ones? And how many would be enough?

BTW i like my applesnails and would like to keep them or at least one as they are not hurting my water quality as many would think. And the betta does not care about them ever except when they are fed.

Any tips?

if it is only at feeding then i would feed the snails at night. cant guaranty(sp?) it will keep him from picking, but if that is the only time he picks at them it might work.

My little girl betta (or boy?) killed a snail I put in for company. I had noticed her chewing it but didnt think she would actually chew it that much!!
I think I should keep the betta by himself...but thats just me!

Hi
Personally, I would remove the snails as constant attacks will surely cause them stress and possibly death. That's if the nitrIte spike doesn't kill them first as snails are not really suitable for a cycling tank.

For the sake of the own snails i gave them to a store... sigh...

PS.: My nitrite droped half its concentration in 12 hours after they were removed. Either i was at the end of nitrite peak or too much poop indeed,
