Dividing a ten gallon???

Post by elliriyanna on Sat Aug 07, 2010 3:43 pm

I was just wondering what was the most bettas you could put in a divided ten gallon? Could I divide it in thirds and put males on the ends and a female in the center? Or halves?

Would thirds work? They would each have about 3 gallons of water.

Or would they do much better with it divided in half even though they could see each other?

What's up with making a lovely big tank for one fish? That's what I'd say is the most fish-friendly thing to do ^_^

If you're really set on dividing it, I'd go with one divide. I think 5 gallons is considered the smallest 'humane' division, so I personally would stay with that, and just have a betta in each side Smile

Be aware that US and UK gallons are different in size. Which are they referring to you need to keep mind. I go with the assumption of which side of the International Date Line the information is coming from. A US gallon is roughly 20% smaller than a UK gallon. 10 us gls = 8.33 uk gls.

So divide a 10 us gl tank in half gives each side 4 uk gls.

There is a sticky at the top here for conversions! Remember if you put the dimensions in to find the volume, use the inside measurement as that is truer volume!

I think 3 gals is the generally agreed minimum, whether that's us or uk I have no idea. I think if they have at least 15-20 litres per fish then it's ok, except maybe for PK males who need more swimming space as they are more active.

its US gallons. Would they be ok in a divided tank? I dont want two males next to each other so a female in the middle and males on the ends ...

If it would be healthy for them

Why don;t you want 2 males next to each other? Smile my males all have male neighbours and it seems to keep them more active as they have competition to show off to.

Personally, I think it's a little small for 3 as that is only 37l according to a conversion site. Also depends on the dimensions of the tank - if it's long rather than tall then that's better, as tall tanks are harder to divide and still give enough floor space

its a typical ten gallon ... More long than tall ... [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Dividing it in just two isnt a problem that I can do Smile

I'm pretty sure its a standard 10gl. like mine at 10"W x 12"H x20"L as I've never seen or heard of a long in 10gl. US (37L). Makes two nice 18.5L cubes as I plan on dividing both of mine.

One at a time as I have to find a home for my Peppered Cory.

Make sure you get the screen and not the plexiglass one. That way the filter and heater will work for both sides.

ICU, med tank, emergency housing, hatchery for brine shrimp or daphnia or even a planter!

Lol I made that mistake already... I'm just keeping the one tank and taking good care of it. I'll mess with the one gallon later

very true Smile I have enough to focus on and keeping one little buddy happy will keep me busy.

Could I get some ADF's or should I just divide the tank and let them each have 5 gallons?

I've heard that you can keep ADF's in with Bettas. It depends on the tempermant of the Betta because some will nip at them. I'm considering ADF's on one half when I divide. Maybe shrimp or pygmy corys.
I just picture a one legged frog swimming in circles! lol!

If you get ADF's you will have to hand feed them every couple of days as they have poor eyesight and won't find their dinner (bloodworms) before the betta does, and if he pigs out it'll make him possibly bloated/constipated.

ADFs are cool though Smile

You could have some small shrimp in the 1 gal, or some snails?

Will shrimp alone keep a small 2.5gl. (U/G filter) cycled & how many? I've seen cherry shrimp 2 for $3(2lbs.).
