Food options...

Post by Mesatalia on Fri Aug 27, 2010 10:32 pm

Right now my two bettas are only getting 4 pellets a day. Now I hear that like brine shrimp or something like that can also be a food as well as those red squiggley worms...ick...but I keep seeing people posting about PEAS?

Can you guys tell me a bit more about the deal with peas and maybe other non-living foods that won't creep me out too much to feed them and how much every day??

De shelled boiled peas are good for clearing constipation and alot of people feed them weekly or twice a week just to stop anything building up lol. You can get freeze dried live foods there not as nutritional but they might not freak you out as much. Or frozen live foods then the wont be moving around. My bettas used to love mosquito lava and blood worms.

Eeeks!! The peas sound like a really good idea. Are they able to eat a whole pea and is it the meal replacement for the day or will they still get their pellets too?

I used to feed a hole pea plus a few pellets. But quite a few people feed a pea instead of that days feed.

Ahhh, I see. I should offer them one. My Delta is getting used to the pellets and sometimes he spits them out a few times before keeping it in and I worry he might get backed up from such a change.

so Mosquito larva? Then blood worms and baby brine shrimps, right? I'll probably get the frozen....I would let them thaw before feeding it to them, correct? I'm sure the packages will have instructions...

I had gotten dried shrimps for the hermit crabs I used to have. Those aren't SOOO bad....

You can normally get a mix pack of frozen foods at your LFS mine does one with blood work, blackworm, brine shrimp and a few different types of mosquito lava. I normally leave them to melt in a tub of tank water for a bit. A betta wont be able to eat a hole cube so you might have to feed a bit a re freeze the rest or crack the cube up before you melt it.

Ahhhh.....my pet supply store might have some. If they don't then I'll be out of luck, lol....not many places around here to get special stuff like that.

TY for the food info!! I wanna make sure my bettas stay happy and healthy with the best fins possible.

You should give the frozen bloodworms a wee go. They sound gross but you get used to them quite quickly! Plus, when you see how much the bettas love them, its hard to deny them. Smile

I feed mine tetra flakes, pellets, frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp. They love the
brine shrimp. A frozen package of ea. is around six dollars and would probably last half a year ea. for two Bettas at least. Just cut a small potion off the little individual frozen block and thaw out for a few minutes. Next I'm buying frozen daphnia to see how they like it.

I spoon feed my two with silver tweezers as the food sinks and I don't want the food to rest on the bottom. Just a worm at at time or so, etc..

Make sure when you boil the peas you remove the outer shell and I give them what mashes easy only. I usually feed pea the next feeding after the bloodworms as the worms are known to bind them up!

Ahhhh, okies, TY for the tips!! It might be a few weeks before I can get the frozen shrimps and worms but I can see if they like the peas. Just the mushy inside, right? Not the skin.

Hehe....my veiltail might not let me feed him like that. He's quite shy.

My Delta on the other hand...he might. he has to inspect everything even if it scares him at first.
