Re: Keeping water warm - ideas
Hi! Well the temp seems to be the same for the moment, but we'll see how it does overnight. A working bulb might make it rise a degree hopefully. I just tried one of those chandelier ones but it was to big to fit in the space. To bad it was 15 watts and would have added a couple degrees at least. Might have melted the plastic too!
I'll look at Home Depot as I have to go there anyway. BTW you are quite welcome!

:D You are such a sweetheart! I told fishy we're gonna have a heater for him and he did a weirdly fast swim around the edge and made a dead stop looking right at me, hahaha. Fishy is happy. It's actually not too bad tonight but in a few hours it'll really begin to chill down. For now I have them by the hottest light we have and it's keeping them content for the moment but the light is right by the window so it'll render useless after a while. I have just a little pad of paper between their glass so they don't see each other. They had a peek and Alpha's gills puffed out further than I've ever seen them go, lol. He's gorgeous when he's puffed up.

lol! Like a rooster! Hey, maybe I'll name one Rooster! I was just think maybe a hi-intensity light might help a bit. You'd have to filter the light. I hope the lamps are helping!
There personalities just tickle the dickens out of me. My two c/t's act so different
from each other its amazing! I want more of them (H/M, HalfSun or feathertail).
Seems you might have a feathertail from what Van said. I'm still new at identifying the tail types, but he knows! Anyway thats a real nice find. Congratulations!

Re: Keeping water warm - ideas
TY ^_^ Rose Tail he said, with the petal-like fins rather than the long strands like feather or crown.
Ok so get this...my Craig's List was flagged because I didn't mention a price I MIGHT be willing to pay....but in the convo I had started to realize the error someone tried claiming that oh they raise bettas and they only need tiny little bowls because of puddles and that I can go ahead and keep begging for stuff I don't need and waste my money on fish when I can use it to get my son into school....
ok how does a few dollars every now and then get my son into school? Really? And I wans't begging, I was just like hey if you're getting rid of stuff then I'll take it before you put it in the trash kind of thing, ya know? I could care less if they replied to the ad or not....though a helpful person woulda been awesome.....but ya know??
CL people are....ugh.....I'm not even gonna say it.
But yeah I'm uploading a rather big video file to youtube of my bettas. I figured out how to do the video on mom's cam.

Re: Keeping water warm - ideas
Pardon me! Rose Tail it is then. Didn't mean to upset Alpha! lol!
I'm sorry that you received such an unwarranted response from a jacka**(I have to tone it done as this is a public forum) that assumes they completely understand the situation from just a few words. Believe me I could and would like to have a few choice words with them. Ignoring them and their unfounded opinions neither quells or fuels their pettiness! Let them wallow in themselves as they are!
Well this morning it looks to be 77 or 78F so I'll see about getting it off to you by
Tuesday. At least it will help with one of the boys allowing you to concentrate on the other one!
Remember that this heater does not have a temperature control and will run constantly. What ever the temperature is, just is. So you'll probably still need to keep it in an area of the house that is warm, warmer or warmest.
Hope the little guys are doing fine!

Re: Keeping water warm - ideas
^_^ TY guys!!
F.B. I'll send you my details in a message. I'll use the heater for Alpha as he's younger and probably less tolerant of cold water. The veil tail is darker in color and seems to not mind the cooler temperatures as much so he'll probably go in the basement (much warmer down there at night, oddly) and my baby can stay with me. I keep him on my bedside table at night and there's a plug right there.
TY SOOOOOOOOO Much!!!
And other people chewed out that other person who was nasty to me, lol. My money troubles is none of their concern.

I did watch your video and Alpha is a beauty! The tank i'm sending isn't much bigger if at all, but since its covered it will retain more heat. I found an extra bulb so the light is working now. Once you're able to upgrade than you have a back up tank or a
hospital tank if ever needed.
These days things being what they are its better not to post personal information!
So I'll do it! lol! Heres my Email address: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Ahhh, I was gonna send it in a PM over the site but I can do it by E-mail too ^_^
And actually, since I have two bettas, I'll only need to worry about one now instead of both, which really helps me out a lot. I get paid either tomorrow or the day after and more than half is going in the gas tank so I'll go to the pet store and see what kind of stuff they have, maybe get a slightly bigger plastic bowl at least, use the vases as hospitals, or as just vases, lmao.
TY again SOOOOOOOO much!! They're gonna be VERY happy betas soon!

Re: Keeping water warm - ideas
Like I said before I don't know if this really any bigger than what you have. I think the temp. is more important now and I would consider the thermometer($4) first. Then you'd have the ability to monitor both tanks. Its my understanding that cooler water reduces their appetite and lowers their immune system.
It is 1.5gl. roughly /Dimensions:7.5"L X 5"W X 10"H. So you've over thanked me!
But you are quite welcome once again!

Re: Keeping water warm - ideas
1.5 gal is about double the size of these vases!
Yeah I'll have enough for a thermo and maybe some better plants. I don't want my fishies unhappy!
Which reminds me....concerning my veil tail regardless of his living conditions he seems to be content enough to attempt a bubble nest. He blew a very tiny one yesterday which has now spread to cling around the rim, but today I see him attempting but every bubble he blows pops right away, then he looks confused for a moment, inspects the area, and tries again. What could be causing his bubbles to pop?? the only things floating there are very soft-edge fabric plants (I took apart the water lily thing to spread it over more surface area to encourage a better nest).
Also....would a sterile bath toy suffice for a floatie bubble nest thing?

Re: Keeping water warm - ideas
TBH I wouldn't know for sure. Since everyone seems to use IAL or bubblewrap. I don't know what you have available where you are as I write this. I'll google yor hometown and see! I'll throw in a leaf and you can split it for the boys. It'll sink after time and I'm not sure how long to leave it in afterwards. Don't want it to mold!
As for floating a bath toy I don't know if its flat enough. I know some use ping pong balls as a toy to alleviate boredom.

Re: Keeping water warm - ideas
Yeah that's why I put the soft caps in....it's just simple little cup and it floats and he pushes it around. I also took apart his faux lilly pad so there's 3 flowers shapes then the green pad floating in there with him. He's made a few bubbles but not many. He just might be waiting to re-settle. Gave him a full WC last night (finally with fully treated water instead of the tap my cousin had him used to) and put fewer rocks in to make more swimming room. I got new water tempering for my RT's change, I think tomorrow evening should be fine. It tempers quick.
It was like 89 degrees inside the house today so they were VERY happy with good water.
I dunno if my RT will make a bubble nest yet. I know he's almost of breeding age if he isn't already, would he be too young to make bubble nests?? about 4-5 months?

Re: Keeping water warm - ideas
I'm not sure about the age that they start blowing nest. I'm guessing that Alpha looks well developed so maybe any time now. I've heard it has to do with conditions and their comfort level somewhere. I'm sure a better answer will follow!
Maybe the IAL I send will help induce him. I get two leaves for $1.00 at the LFS so I don't have to pay shipping! I don't know if you are dealing with an independent or the larger pet store chains. Can you get them locally?
In any event Netty posted an article in a sticky called Rainy Season. Just enter Rainy Season in the search box at the top. I found it very interesting and if I ever
get to the point where I try breeding I'll incorperate whats feasible!

Re: Keeping water warm - ideas
Awesome!! I'm gonna go to all the places who sell a bunch of fish and see what they say and what they have.
I've also been thinking about the type of fish Alpha is...and I discovered something.
RT is a secondary fin type, meaning that he can be Delta, Super Delta, or Halfmoon and still also be a RT. So he IS a delta, just with the RT "deformity". It DID start out as a deformation while breeding HMs and they just kinda began to breed more with that genetic trait. Developed in the late 80s and from that the CTs and HS's came about as an EXTREME extreme of RT....
Odd how it works. It's like there's the fin shape, then the fin type, two different things that can form one tail...like a mix-match game type of thing.

Re: Keeping water warm - ideas
I've only peeked a couple of times on the genetics as I can see I'm going to confuse myself. I need things in simplest forms some or is it most of the time?!
I might go so far as to just try a pair of c/t's so I have a good chance at knowing the results! lol!
Just because it says Feathertail on my heading don't take it as bona fide experience as 400 post are just idle chat with Kizno!

Re: Keeping water warm - ideas
ok, let's see it as human hair types....
You've got naturally straight hair, curly hair, fuzzy hair, ect.
Then you have the blonde hair and the brown hair and various hair colors.
Any hair type can have any hair color....technically.....generally speaking.
Well the hair type is like the fin shape and the hair color is like the fin type...
Or something like that.
HMs, VTs, Deltas, HMs, SDs, they're all shaped fins.
But HMs can have various different styles, like double tail, or rose tail or the common single tail and even feather tail.
Deltas and SDs can have these types as well...
I'm not sure about the other types....I'm still doing research...
But Alpha is a Delta with the rose trait....so it's like a fine-haired girl with natural curls, is the general idea I think....if you wanna personify them.

Well recently the water has gotten as cold as 65 and Alpha still swims around like nothing's wrong, lol. Though right now he's fighting fin rot
Got his water treated though so here's hoping.

He may swim around alright but big drops in temp can stress them and weaken the immune system which could be why he go fin rot.
