Re: Females in a community?

Went to a pets @ home today just for a look as i wont buy from them from past bad experience, but i saw a few fish that took my eye...
the Rummy-nose tetras and the Zebra & Leopard Danio. Iv looked on wikipedia about these types of fish and they seem to be okay for a community. What do you think?

Danios are VERY zippy. I found they stressed my more sedate fish out. How your females react depends on their character. You'll have to assess that. They are one of the most hardy fish around.
Rummy-noses are kept by a lot of aquarists with expensive fish. The red starts to fade if water quality deteriorates, so it's a good fore-warner.
Either would be fine with regards to nipping. Now it's just personal choice :-)

I really dislike danios... in my experience they do fin nip, though you may not find that. In my boyfriend's community tank there are a couple of zebra danios which have long fins, which is a common mutation in them. The other danios are always taking chunks out of the long-finned ones, and have had a go at juvenile swordtails too.

Also, they swim constantly and boisterously at the surface, so you'd have to assess whether that might stress your girls. The tetras sound good though Smile

Like time out said the danios are zippy and can be a little nippy. They also do best at slightly cooler temps. Rummy nose tetra should be fine they do better at higher temps 26+. If your looking for something colour full ember tetra, galaxy rasbora, harlequin rasbora or black neons would all work well.

What about the BN?
If your just going for corys i would go for a big group of about 10-12 they look and do alot better in bigger groups.

Fair enough. Neons should be fine although they are know for not lasting long but they can work out well if kept correctly. You can mix them but you need to make sure you have atleast 4 of each but 6+ of each would be best.

Right okay, thanks about the corys Smile Im not ruling out a BN just asking lots of questions so i know whats best. Iv been looking on wikipedia at different types of Pleco's and all the ones i seem to like grow too big! But i do like the look of the Zebra Plec but as you said they are very expensive.

Rummynoses are sweet fishies! I've not had any nipping probs with them and they look lovely in a large shoal as the colours are so pretty Smile

Albino corys are so funny, they seem more mental than others lol!

Who long is the tank?
If you want something a little different what about a spiny eel. Or a peacock goby.

You might get away with a spiny eel then. The peacock gobies would work well in there. I dont know much about them though andy would be the best person for info.

Disappointed found nothing in MH as most of the fish where new and wherent being sold till tomorrow...cant go back tomorrow either Rolling Eyes There where some nice baby bristlenoses then normal colour and 2 albino ones. They where quite nice but of course couldnt sell them till tomorrow. They where priced up at £10 does that sound about right for a bristlenose?

My other lfs was more disappointing as they usually have so many more plec's than they had today, but its about right when i go looking for something i cant get but when im not there's loads, lol!

Went looking at the 'goldfish' and they are really pretty so maybe getting a new tank for some of those, although the ones that look like they have 2 tails look strange. The ones with the bumpy head (i say they look like they've got brains hanging out!) are so cute!

I did see a catfish i liked cant remember what its called but it looked very lively and they where silver...il find out.
